And actually, when you are a tightwad like me, you tend to tackle any issues to save money.

Seriously, I trust myself doing the job than anyone else. So far, knock on wood, I haven't screwed up resulting to double or triple cost had I asked someone/dealer to do it.

I know someone who worked on their own and when they encountered the need for special tools simply made them lol. He was talking about making some more for others but I'm. It sure he's done it - specifically tools to get the chains timed right. If you don't crack the case halves is there anything else needed? Sleeves, rods, and Pistons look no harder than a Subaru and friends of mine build those often. Somewhere I saw a video of doing the sleeves and whatnot, I'll try to find it. I'd love to do my rods and clean up the heads while it's apart but am doubting my ability.

My father would often fabricate his own specialty tools and there are tricks that can be used to get desired/correct results. The guys that like to do major work on a somewhat regular basis would probably be best to acquire proper tools. I thought I had seen someone that rented them?

Over at Pelican, we rented (actually more borrowed) tools among members.

And yes, I fabricated my tools also.

Pmafia is infamous around these parts
What was excessive metal? Do you have any pictures? These engines do rattle. There was a guy on 6speed that rebuilt his engine due to the rattle. When he cracked it open there was nothing wrong, just some slight shadowing on the IMS bearing.

This is what is sounded like before the rebuild

And this was after

The funny part is the rattle came back after he put more miles on it. Just wanted to save you the headache of rebuilding if you don't have to.

I appreciate it Pmafia. The car had the noise when I first got it but after a while it got louder and louder. Before I removed the engine the noise was excessive. When I changed the oil for the last time the oil drain bolt had lots of large flakes stuck to the magnet. Thanks everyone for the help.
