Speaker Question
Speaker Question
I am having the dealer pop in some artic silver speaker grills on my car (01 turbo-non- bose). While the door panel is off, is there any upgrade I can do with the speakers? Sound system sucks, but I do not want to replace the whole thing, thanks in advance. (Any upgrade must fit stock speaker grills)
Ritchie, it sounds like our cars are sonically similar. That is mine had the stock speakers and I thought I would replace them and upgrade the sound a "little" bit. I specifically didn't want to add an amplifier and sub-woofer because of space and weight considerations.
This was a mistake. Without the amplifier I can't drive the speakers to their capability and without the sub-woofer the bass is really, really muddy with the upgraded speakers. So, in my own humble opinion I wouldn't recommend changing just the speakers.

Ritchie,
If weight is not a consideration, upgrade the front and rear speakers and add a sub. You should get by with two amps; one to power the components and another for the sub. I personally like MB Quart for speakers and JL Audio for a sub. As for amps, Eclipse, Alpine, PPI, are a few choices. As for keeping your stock head unit for a "factory" look, Alpine makes a neat unit that keeps the sound integrity while providing a connection between stock head unit and amps. Hope this helps.
