996 T vs. 997 T dilemma
Yeah, the Carfax is clean. That thought had crossed my mind, my only question is how hard is it going to be to sell with the tip? Are those much less sought after?
If its in good shape you could even get over 60k or more.
46k is the cheapest I've seen, if you don't take it share the link
I've got a car with similar power mods and it's a great daily driver. The difference is I don't have straight cut gears, and if I did I don't know if I would still want to drive it as often.
What everyone said about the auto is 100% true though. If you get that car, you're going to wish you had a manual after a few months when the initial love affair with the new car dies down a bit. I know I would regret it.
There's no rush, right? You can certainly find another 996TT that is better suited to your needs that may even be cheaper.
Regarding the engine...the 996TT and 997TT through '09 have basically the same engine and it is on a completely different level than the M96/M97 in the NA cars. It was originally conceived for the GT1 race car and is detuned for mass sale in the TT cars but that's what makes it such a great modding platform. It's a wonderfully engineered dry-sump engine that is extremely durable even if the WHP is doubled from stock. That says a lot about these cars.

I will jump in with my opinion: I have a Tip. I have had a lot of cars with manual, so like them both. Shifting is fun, and my DD is 6sp manual. But i like my Tip. I have driven manual Porsche=fun.
You pay more for manual, and more for low miles.
You can pick up someones else's mods on the cheap, if they aren't too big a mess, and you are handy. Or, you can buy a OEM car, and take your time and do it the way you want. I would be very hesitant to buy a handful of mods unless they were very low cost, to base. But, more HP= more fun for sure. Probably more maint.
I think you need to broaden the possible pool of applicants.
I think most of the guys in here mod'd their cars themselves, and are very knowledgeable on what works on their own cars. And we all like more HP. So many cars on the market with 500HP these days.
Can't have the 996T falling behind!

While I'm not in a huge rush, the 997 seems to be a great deal that I could drive and not really lose any money on until I find the ONE. A little update on the 997: the spoiler is stuck in the up position due to a bad hydraulic pump. I gather that this is a fairly common issue, but is still $$ i would have to put into it right off the bat. I'm assuming I'll be able to get some money knocked off the asking price due to this.
buddy of mine just rebled a 997t spoiler the other day. took about an hour. doesn't matter 996 or 997 the spoilers all fail at some point or another. some of us manage to keep them working. mines into its 12th year and still working.
so a few pgs later, it sounds as if the 997t is priced well, would suit your immediate needs, is more comfortable to drive daily, and probably less prone to the mystery part diagnosis you would doubtless endure, were you to buy that 1/2 of a race car the previous owner of the 996t you listed as the other option has "created".
so if you're seriously considering dd'ing it? get the 97t. plus at the end of the day, you'd still have a 997 turbo to get in every day, and while no one questions the sheer raw fun of a 500/600 hp modded turbo, it isn't the smartest move for you. today.
if you're serious about the questions you posed, and have honestly stated your goals, then the unmolested yet higher mileage ( no big deal ) 997 turbo makes far more sense. today.

I had a PPG dogbox in my R32 GT-R and it was retarded loud! Every gear was straight cut. NO WAY would I consider that for a daily.
996 T vs. 997 T dilemma
I have a modded 996t I've been driving daily for two years. No problems.
Mines for sale (Ya shameless plug)
But I wouldn't hesitate to drive mine across country. The mods it does have are not what I would do, so I'd end changing them anyway like I did with my car.
If it's what you want then have it checked out.
You ll find a lot of guys on here have very strong opinions that side with whatever route they went, especially regarding stock v modified.

I love the auto i have one. Its a 996 turbo auto and it rips. If your racing it get an auto you can boost it off the line and you don't lose boost like the manual when shifting gears. In my opionion you can enjoy the car with less shifting. The fastest cars in the world are all autos. Manuals are fun too if you like jack assing around but remember its no corvette where you can light up the back tires its awd. Plus if you live in a big city and lots of traffic auto is nice. Its all up to you but im just giving my feedback the autos are very nice and Porsche is all auto after 2008. So see autos are the way its going.
w an lsd! that'll light up the rears LOL and yes, autos that are manuals are going the way of unrestricted driving without filing a flight plan and getting a "permit" think i'm kidding!? just see the CA ab 350 bill now being debated ( soon WILL be law ) which is a drive by MILE TAX COMING to Kali! also mandating black boxes in the car that transmit all data to your insurance CO in real time!! this isn't science fiction, it's FACT and coming soon, except all new cars already HAVE the blackboxes. but just wait til that requires a RETROFIT! it's good night, over, kiss your discretionary motoring "fun" goodbye.anything fun will be outlawed. watch.
all the more reason to get a manual, to enjoy it while we "still" ( seriously ) can
