The turbo shocks are 55mm diameter and the GT2/3 and other 996 RWD are 52mm. Not sure about the Ohlins, but several of the higher end coilovers are the same and provide an adapter sleeve to adapt. Just keep in mind if you plan to ever change uprights to the GT2/3/Cup units that the larger diameter turbo coils won't work unless they are the type with removable adapter sleeves.

If you go into the knowledge forum their is a thread about GT2/3 uprights and suspension that paints a pretty good picture.

I keep thinking of putting my turbo up for sale and getting another 40th AE 996 or 997.

I want to do some track days here and there so feel I should pin my coolant lines, plus I miss the sound and steering feel of my 996.

So I"m looking at 6500 for exhaust and the coolant pipe, plus $2k for an LSD installed. I feel like I'm better off just getting a 997, but I really do love my 996. So a couple of questions.

Can I still run my current KW3's with the 2wd set up? I thought I could but based on the above it looks like I may not be able to?

Can you guys elaborate on the steering feel improvement? Assume turn in response it similar. Are you able to feel more of what is going on?

TIA

no reason you cant run your suspension you have. your not changing any of that. as 6500 why so much? decent exhaust systems used run under 2k$. pinning coolant lines shouldnt be more than 1500 to 2000$.

Thanks 32

I was thinking 2k for the LSD installed.
I've been quoted $3000 (maybe more) for the coolant pipes by Midwestern Eurosport
And I'm really not a fan of drone so looking at speedtechs quiet set up for $2800

Working on getting some better pricing for getting the pipes done. Was budgeting $500 for the diff install, which maybe a little high. The wavetrac us $1400 and assume shipping on top of that.

wavetrac is a great choice in an rwd configuration for anyone with a dual duty car. the main point to consider when estimating costs are the 1400 and the labor. it isn't so much the minimal machine work for the gear lash shims you'll need. its the in/out of the trans that'll cost you if you're not DIY. particularly if you're having to use a shop that engages in buggery of its customers.

all in, a wavetac install should be a couple hours ( max! ) machine labor and the 6-8 max to drop/r&r the trans.

obviously this is why many of us waited for upgrades or a clutch or trans work to install the wavetrac. best mod money ever spent on this car though.

what machine work did you do. zero machining to install mine. simply new bearings and shims to set the lash.

Turbo version so the suspension fits your car. It's not necessary to switch to GT2 knuckles to go RWD.

Exhaust, tune and RWD (with/without LSD) would really wake up your car.

If your motor is coming out for coolant pipes (and whatever other maintenance "while you're in there" the car needs), then it's worth doing the LSD at that time.

You can keep your KW3s with RWD unless you want to run GT2 front knuckles.

Steering feels more nimble with RWD.

I completely agree. The car is better in RWD without a LSD, just not the best it could be.

i didn't do it myself. perhaps i misspoke when i referenced machine shop work, when i was referring to the press i believe was needed ( iirc ). but re-shimming was required as you say.

agree, to say nothing of the ability to throttle steer which we have all been doing in 911's since we began enjoying them and alone makes the rwd/lsd mod worth any price of admission. throttle steering, while not *impossible*, is much more fraught with peculiarity when still running awd.

this car rwd with even a tbd lsd, is a vastly different and more favorable experience.

Quick question: Any problem with installing an LSD rear and keeping AWD??

GT2 Intercoolers
5 Bar Fuel Pressure Regulator

It does throttle steer now quite well.

Been well over a year now since going RWD. I've pushed the car quite hard in the canyons and through some familiar turn transitions near where I live. Still no LSD and truthfully I've not really thought about it so it must not be a need for me. My previous '99 996 C2 had one and I've had Corvettes with them as well. I could fairly easily install one if I thought it was a must have. I learned in my motorcycle racing days, if it's a need it will become apparent. If a problem arises, you will look for a solution. That's why I went KWV1 coilovers, to stiffen and lower suspension and trim my rake angle. Front end would push, so I went a rear adjustable sway bar. Car steered heavy and felt "trucky" in turns. I removed the front diff, axles and cardon shaft. All good now. Read my post #1 on page one for more.

about the lsd, I can't tell you front experience driving the car both ways, it's much much better with an lsd. yes it's ok without it but with one the car is so much better in all conditions. you don't know how much of a difference it truly makes until you experience it in these cars
