Extended Warranty... I bought one
Extended Warranty... I bought one
I bought one for my TT. My car is an '02 w/ 2k miles. When I bought the car at the dealer they offered it up. It's a company called 1st Guard and apparently have been in business for 160 years as a company and the dealer has been selling ext. warranties for Porsches for 4 years.
I bought a 5 year (from today, 60K miles total) warranty for $2k.
My car has 2.1 years on the factory left, then this would cover for 3 after that up to 60k miles.
It only listed exclusions which were all the typical wear and tear parts.
I think it's a decent deal and I've read how everyone has had trouble finding warranties, so I just thought I'd throw this out there and see what everyone's thoughts are.

Where did you purchase your car? Did they offer you the Porsche extended warranty? I am under he impression that some cars may not qualify for the Porsche extended warranty.

This was not the certification program warranty. They typically don't do that unless it's under years left of factory warranty.
Since my car has a little over 2 years it was another. What I like about this was it adds 3 years to the end of my factory warranty vs. 2 years in the certification program. Obviously a factory based warranty is better, but this seemed pretty solid.
It cost $2000.

I'm getting a 7yr, 125,000mile warranty on the 2003TT I got from Park Place Ltd. in Bellevue. I keep my cars for a long time and hope this is the right decision. The Warranty is through Ultimate Warranty Corp. and supposedly is the same level of coverage as the original new car warranty. They are charging me $3595 for this coverage. Does anyone have any experience with this company or recommendations?
thanks

Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease - for example spending 3595.00 on a warranty is equal to a 3595.00 failure occuring right now. I think there is less than a 50% chance of a 3595.00 failure in 7 years for the TT since they are rated one of the most reliable cars in production (JD Powers). Does the warranty cover wear items like the clutch and brake pads? Even if it does, we have a member here that tracks his car and still has the original clutch at 89K miles. Warranties are good when covering the initial (relatively) high failure rates (infant mortality) of a new car (bathtub failure curve) but once everything is working for 1-2 years, then typically the next high point in the failure curve is the end of service life. Old Porsches typically soldier on with just minor repair items like fuel pumps, etc for years.......

It's insurance. It's piece of mind. Obviously the odds are in the warranty company favor, or they wouldn't do it, but I'd like the piece of mind that I'm not liable for a 35k engine if something catastrophic happens. Or even 10k or so if there's a major tranny issue. Say your odds are 50%, in poker, I'd make that bet every time. 4k to win 10k or more is better than a 50% return.
Questions to consider on aftermarket warranties...Do your homework first...
How long has the company been around??
Do a BBB check on the company(Any complaints???)
What does it actually cover???
Is there a limit on the repair charge per hour and parts's cost???
Exclusions???
Deductibles...
If I had the choice, I would always stick with a Porsche extended warranty...
I have heard of too many warranty companies going belly up, that supposedly had been around for years. Buyer Beware...IMHO
