question on floor jacks

Does anyone have an opinion (positive or negative) on the aluminum floor jacks offered by Harbo Freight Tools? They are certainly priced right.

Thanks,

Not directly, but I would measure how low your car is
at the jacking points, maybe even measure with one
tire deflated, just to be safe, and then measure how
far inboard the jacking point is. The jack has to clear
your car *and* clear it to that depth inboard, to work.
My car is lower than stock. The only jack I know of that
gets clear to the jacking point in all cases is the *real*
*low* one from Griots garage. It goes down to 2.75".

John, I amongst many others I know use the Harbor Freight jack, its a 1.5 ton jack which is fine, the jack is made well and has low clearance so its not a problem with lowered cars, IMO its a great value, so far so good.

John,

What are you buying the jack to do? Use at home? Or take to the track? If buying to use at home, why not get an AC jack for a few dollars more, and 10x the quality. Yes, some people have been able to buy a Harbor Freight and it seems to still be working. Many people have had them fail (hydraulics gone so no longer lifts or starts falling as soon as it lifts). No one that I know has had an AC jack fail. If you are going to the track and need a jack, that is a bad time to find out you have a problem. So the simple question is do you feel lucky??

Personally, if I am lifting up my car, I do not mind spending more for the jack than the trim on my door sills. Hey, but that is just me..

Thanks,
I bet that if you ask 100 people, 50 will love it because it works well and is inexpensive and 50 will hate it because it is inexpensive and not as high a quality as you'd get for $1,000. That said, I think the extra value you get for each extra dollar spent has diminishing returns. Bottom line, it really depends on what you want. The best jack no matter how much it costs, or a good jack for a good price.

I have used one at the track since Jan of last year. It's very light weight, easy to cart around and does the job. No complaints.

Okay...I went to the asedeals.com site and they also have a brand of aluminum jacks called Ranger. I like the lighter weight aspect. Any thoughts on these?

Thanks,
