Secondary Air Pump Fault

Car is 2002 996 TT. The check-engine light went on and drove it to a local shop. The pump, the Kombi valve, the solenoid are working. The hoses are clean and vacuum is good. So the only thing remains is possibly a clogged duct to the exhaust; one bank has more air coming out of it then the other.

The question is, is there anyway to clean the body/duct (below the Kombi valve) without having to drop the engine??

Any help is appreciated!

I just went through this. Mine started off with the same codes. What I found is one bank will naturally through a code when the pump is weak. Not necessarily a clogged port though. If it is clogged you can pull the hose off the SAI pump and put a turkey baster of seaform in that hose before the first start of the day. Put it all back together and start it and let it smoke a bunch. That may help. I went through the cleaning process before my pump hard failed and it did not make any difference. Ultimately to test pull the 2-wire power connector off the pump and put 12v to it and make sure you can hear it run. If not pull the pump. If 12v causes it to run or you know it is not making noise at startup, check the pump fuse in the back seat area near the ECU.

I ended up pulling my SAI pump and found that when I popped the cover off that it was full of water and rusted to the point that the impeller would not spin. It is a poor design because the pump intake is open to ingest water and whatever other gunk. And because that pump run very periodically it can rust easily. If you pull the pump you can clean it and unseize it and test with a battery to make sure it spins and reinstall.

Hi Thanks!

1. Seafoam? Are you saying you pump in the cleaning foam to the SAI pump? And let it blow through the whole thing? I'm not sure if I understand you correctly... I suggested something like this to the mechanic and he said the cleaning agent will damage the vavle in the Kombi valve body because of its corrosive nature.
2. Will definitely check out the pump body!

Thanks again!

Yes. This is what I and others have done. The moisture and other crap that gets in there is also corrosive. I am sure their are likely other less corrosive products that you could also use.
