Rear side window regulator replacement
Rear side window regulator replacement
I seem to have a bad regulator on my passenger rear side window. The window was stuck halfway up and making a grinding noise. I have done a bit of research on this and it looks like its expensive to purchase a new regulator ($500+) and a PITA to DIY. I figured I'd give it a try anyway. To start with, I want to view what is happening, thus I need to access the area without destroying the trim panel. From the picture attached, you can see I have removed the rear seat connector and the speaker. The trim panel is still solidly in place. I don't see anything else to remove. Does someone know what I need to do next to remove this panel? Thanks
Scratch that. Another cup of coffee and and few brain cells later, I realized I needed to pop off the plastic around the seat belt, which hid a screw. Also there is another screw inside the speaker area. After that, It's just a matter of carefully manhandling the panel starting at the bottom and pulling it away from the car body, then lifting it up from the window area. Now to access the regulator!
Getting the regulator out was tedious, but relatively simple, given the attached set of instructions I found on Rennslist. The dreaded bolt on the bottom of the regulator can be accessed by removing a grommet near the carpet by the seat bottom. This has a cable going through it, which just happens to be the cable for the regulator. Once the grommet is out of the way, the bottom regulator bolt can be loosened easily.
Note the regulator in the picture. The cable has come off its pulley (white plastic pulley at top of regulator . The motor seems OK. I would like to try reinstalling the cable on this regulator rather than sending away for fixing or buying a new one. Does anyone know how this is done?
Where is new thread?
I started a thread (https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...regulator.html) intending to add details and pics of the replacement but life got in the way. I found a high quality kit with metal pulley for cheap on ebay and used it but I looked for it again a while back and it was gone. This thread includes a link to a place that rebuilds them. I'd check for a kit though. Relatively easy DIY.
