The heat's no different than the nonVVT turbo. The issue is just that
making the parts that allow turbo blades to alter their configuration,
and to make these moving parts last in the conditions of heat and the
non-friendly particulate matter in exhaust gas, is hard.

I have heard (I cannot actually verify) that some
European Tuners already have the Tuning done
and ready for the 997TT.
