boost valve questions

hoping someone could give me some basic info...

what are boost valves and how would a "defective" boost valve affect boost/bar reading? ie, could it allow the car to produce more boost than it would otherwise?

TIA.

Re: boost valve questions

I am guessing you are talking about the diverter valves/blow off valves/recirculating valves.... if so:
I can tell you from experience that boost will drop dramatically...While my valves were not defective, one of the hoses cracked and blew off one of them and my boost dropped .3 bar immediatly... You can deff. feel it...

Also, when defective they make a wierd 'honking' sound
GO to www.evoms.com and under 996TT engine there is a good description of what dump valves are...

As a matter of fact, when the diverter valves on my 01 went bad, it did allow the car to produce more boost--I was getting boost readings of 1.4-1.5 under WOT, but it did not take long for the ECU to cut the boost to almost nothing presumably because of the boost levels I was seeing.

Took the car in and the first thing the dealer asked me (and they know me very well, and weren't busting my chops) was did I chip the car because it was running like a raped ape. I said no, it's totally stock and if you keep driving it awhile the overboosting will cause the ECU to cut the boost. They drove some more, said I was right, and it was entirely the diverter valves. Replaced them, and the car resumed to more normal boost levels--.8-.9, and brief instances at 1.0 bar.

paul and kevin: thanks, that is the exact info i was looking for. i just went thru the same exercise with my dealer and they said the boost valves needed to be replaced. my car is completely stock too and i was getting slightly high bar readings as well. appreciate the confirmation.
