Removinng front axle - what tool to use?

I'm going to be installing coilovers soon and have been doing a lot of reading about the procedure. I came across a website showing a guy using an air hammer to remove the front axle from the steering knuckle. Is an air hammer necessary? Are there other tools or way to remove the axle? In the link below it's Step 5.

You shouldn't really have to remove it, I just pull down on the front and squeeze them into the wheel well.

If you completely need to do it. You can just remove the six Allen bolts. No need to remove from the spline.
