I'm Back...BOOST ON!
Well I finally got back from traveling and able to deal with the car with the new mods (Kevin's Hybrid turbos, FVD Al intake plenum, Kevin's programming, Si Boost hoses, ported and polished headers, 5bar FPR, Sachs Stage 2 LWFW). some time ago I was finished breaking in the new turbos and finally went WOT...codes (PSM/ABS and eventually CEL). Guess what...another POS MAF. We changed the MAF cleared the codes...left her in stock for now and ...all I can say is WOWWWW! goes 0-.8/.9bars instantly (this is the stock programming)...holds .8 everywhere. I'm back...loading Kevin's performance program tonight. I hope someone figures out the MAF situation...they just plain s*ck! Hitachi are you out there?

the programming should be made to specific MAF.... I was told that otherwise u r robbing HP. the stock MAF can only do so much. with that said, I had 575 HP to the wheels on kevins stage 5s and never blew a maf.
I really think that the new MAF will fix the issue. The stock MAF makes it's peak voltage at 1400 kgs/hr, or 51.33 lbs/min, and at 10hp/lb/min, that's 513hp max. But those engine's don't make that efficiency, so maybe 490 or so hp, they're pegged. Now, the input voltage is 12v, so the thing keeps making more output voltage, but the ecu has a diode clamp on it to keep it from exceeding that voltage, so the thing just keeps drawing more and more current till it pops. there is a fix and its been out for a while but it involves Todd Knighton. he uses a different MAF housing and MAF and incorporates that into the programming... including no throttle body shut down... also, all the evoms/IA cars taht are GT series have the TB shutdown bypassed. markski |
good to hear wross!

Congrats WRoss!!!!

Cool Wross! When I added the FVD Intake & VFlow to my GT640 kit, I instantly sarted hitting 1.3 bar, getting TB shut down and popping MAF's. The extra air-flow from the 2 add ons could not be processed by the OEM MAF and it would pop. I don't understand how some higher HP cars can not burn through MAFS. Hopefully the fix will arrive soon.

do u need different programing for a 968 MAF???????????? running evo stage 2 but thinking of using the 968 MAF since i've gone through 2 MAF's already

Is pulling the PSM/ABS CEL pretty much indicitive of a failing MAF??? I have been pulling those more and more frequently lately.....now they both come on within about a minute of firing up my car.....everytime.....gotta get it in the shop.....

Chris My car feels sluggish and like shlt since my evo v flow, but no CEL's or anything, blah! Dont know what to do.. BTW wross congrats :) |

Mark trial and error my man. Your right, i hardly notice a performance gain or difference, first day it felt good, now its garbage feeling :(
|
Martin, take it out and see if it helps... maybe u just expected to feel the difference and realized none... just like $2K headers... I always say... get a good program and good hybrid turbos as a start... then work ur way down to the bolt ons... and yet most guys go the other way... mixing and matching.... v flows with 986 mafs... etc... I think thats crazy. why would anyone want to put an air box on a car that is already MAF sensitive if the tuning program he has was not tuned for it. how is the ecu going to understand the extra info(air).
And IM not saying anything that its the tuners fault... cause its not... they dont make u buy a vflow with satge 2 program... we act like little kids buying everything that comes out... without reason and end goals... Buy a kit that was tuned with all the parts on it... or a kit that can be tuned for what u already have... I never had the vflow and never blew a single maf. I had 4 ecus and 3 different turbo kits... |
Thanks to all. I've been very patient letting things work out (and breaking in turbos). I don't believe it is the V-flow itself, but that filter is suspiscious (I had the oiled one in although it had been cleaned once...now I'm dry). I still think the MAF is way too sensitive. The boxster MAF is probably not the solution either (unless you have the HP of Scott or Mark, et.al.). It does seem the PSM/ABS is indicative of a bad MAF. At first we thought it was Throttle body shut down...but in the end another blown MAF. I kept the old one to get some of my sparky friends to take a look at it. I believe Hitachi is close to a solution!

Just wanted to clarify those 2 things and make sure you weren't misguided! Best Regards, Evan :) |
I had the FVD intake plenum and it was one of the most important add ons I ever put on... worked liek a charm. most guys overlook this one as well.
WHy? casue u have to drop the engine to install. one should do it when changing the clutch. |
