Order A 997tt Or Wait

What do you guys think, should I order one now, or wait for a possible 3.8 liter turbo or other upgrades down the pipeline.

Any feedback would be great

The best turbo is always the next turbo. So when the next one gets here, you will have the same decision to make.

either order the TT and enjoy, or wait for the next X-50 package, if that's what they're calling it on the 997 or if you're really patient and have deep pockets, put your order in for the next GT2.

PDK will be out in two years time so that's something worth waiting for.

Tough...I would wait. The GT2 is coming. (great information on it in CD). And the 2nd year always has a few great improvments. Looks like y have nothing now so go get a nice 02/03 drive it a years or so...You wont lose much, you can learn the car and have more choices next year....

It's Porsches upcoming "flappy-paddle" gearbox. A twin clutch box if I'm not mistaken just like Audis DSG.

It is Audi's DSG, the reason that they cannot make it right now is because audi has a patent on the dual clutch sequential gearbox.

Wait for second model year.

I'm waiting. Porsche has not proven able to produce quality cars in the first model year.

This doesn't make sense. Porsche has used dual clutch gearboxes for their Group C 956/962 racecars in the past....

I'd buy a used 996TT - they are a steal in the USA! Throw a few bucks at some mods and wait to see what pans out with the 997.

They might be dual clutch but the audi transmission actually engages two gears at once, it is so smooth you can hardly tell that it shifted. For examples on a 1-2 shift second is engaged even before 1st is released. Is this what the Porsche racecars are doing. I know Audi has the patent on the technology, maybe that is just for street cars though.

You can't patent every dual-clutch gearbox. Audi has just patented DSG. Porsche can either develop their version of DSG or just take it from Audi (since they coperate a lot with Group VAG anyway). I am sure someone patented torque-converters at some time but every brand has a torque converter based gearbox...

As far as DSG is concerned, it is a manual gearbox with 2 primary axles. One has 1st, 3rd, 5th and the other 2nd, 4rth and 6th. The clutch doesn't preselect a gear. It is just ready to engage the other axle since the two clutches are homocentric. It is complicated and it indeed works well and offers great shifting. But it has its drawbacks too. Cars with DSG can handle a limited amount of torque and e-gear which is the form in which DSG is used in the Gallardo is much more expensive to build.

My source is my dealer, but he said that Porsche actually consulted and helped design the DSG used by Audi and Lambo. They have been confused why it has taken so long to put it in a Porsche. Many have commented on torque issues, and I don't understand what is different between the lambo and Audi gear boxes.

Keep in mind that VW's DSG gearboxes automatically upshift rather than staying at the redline. I wouldn't want that in a 911.
