Kind of a funny story...
I work with the public in a pretty small town(50k pop), and we invariable end up talking about cars. It seems that just about everyone either has or knows someone that has a really fast car, I often hear about single digit ET's from everything from honda civics to full size trucks. I usually keep my mouth shut but today I just couldnt keep quiet. This guy is taking about his old 1st gen RX7, remembering it to be a amazing performer, etc. He says he could probably take me in my 996tt. I start laughing and ask if he is serious. He is and says its more about the driver than the car. I say, their is nothing to stepping on the gas and that I would put buslengths on him, my car has 500hp etc. Then I get cocky and say that my car is probably the fastest in our whole town. He busts out BS!! at that and states there is no way I can beat his friend who has a "really fast car". Its a camaro that runs crazy 1/4 mile times. I say I will kill him from a 50mph roll. He calls the guy up straight away and it turns out that he has a 69 camaro and a C5 vette and the owner is pretty sure he can beat me with either. He thinks the "stock" vette will do better from a roll as the camaro is geared really low. He goes on to say that he has beaten everything with this vette including ferraris. I again let them know that I have a 500hp car and that i will destroy him. The guy seems to waver a little but brings up the ferrari kill again and says his car goes 180 and he is sure he can hang with me at least. So know we just have to set up a meet. i cant wait!
Why are people so ready to boast and lie about their cars? Im serious, I regularly hear about 8 and 9 sec cars owned by young kids and everyone else. Does anyone else experience this or is it just my town?

 

Alot of people are new to cars and havn't had their butt handed to them by enough "sleepers" yet. I used to think I had the fastest car and then I pulled my head out and realized that there is always a faster car around the corner and alot of times it's not the car you expect.

IF the Vette is stock you should easily beat him, just hope it's not blown or built with huge nitrous. Could be a good run.

 

i use to hear it all the time when I worked in retail at car audio shops. My brother has a 9sec camaro (not kidding it is a 502 900+hp tubbed and all) and i would always love to hear how a kid in his civic can take it in the 1/4 mile... now I do know there are some fast as civics and what not... but i know what you mean. I do have a couple friends that have some 400+hp STI's and what not and they are fast *** cars, but top speed is alot different.

Be careful, man. Your car is very quick...but never underestimate another car.

 

I very recently raced (4 times) a 70 Chevelle SS 454 with 525 Crank Horsepower built up 460 CI big block. I killed him every time.
the only thing that made my heart flutter (defeat???) was when I rolled
him from first gear: I immediately hit rev limiter and he pulled me good
(TEMPORARILY), at the top of second I caught him and in third I pulled
by him and fourth I pulled out in front of him in his lane!
He and his "beer muscle buddy" were astounded and pissed.
My final reply was wait until I get rid of these Puny little (K-16) stock turbos... LOL !!!!!!!!! It is very fun to "kill" the uninformed.

I aked what he had done to it and he says its a stock 97 C5 with 375bhp. Does the hp # sound right?

that is high, they are 345 stock and weigh about 3200lbs or so... good for mid-high 13's out of the box (13.81 at 105 I read)

 

If it is stock then you will kill him. No problem.

 

Thats what I thought as well. He thinks he can hang but I should be running away from him by the time I hit 100 or so. He thinks he will beat me because he probably pulled on a Mondial 5 years ago! Funny.
It irritates me that most peolple always think that ferrari is faster and better than porsche. People can be so ignorant. People are like "wow, your car is faster than a ferrari, really??" Like they cant believe it. These are also people who wouldnt know an enzo from a 328.

 

I thought 375 seemed hi, I remembered the C5 ZO6 to be about 400 bhp. Funny how hp numbers go up sometimes

 

Guys who know you have 500hp and still want to race very RARELY have a stock car even though they say so! the kids with the fast 1/4 mile times are always running NOS, just get them on the highway they have no top end. just my 2 cents.

 

A stock C5? They made 350 HP. Damn...if that's the case, it will literally be a waste of your time regardless of what speed you start at. You'll destroy him.

 

My counter question would be, who gives a ****?
