Been reading around the forum for a couple of days about the p1128 and the p1130. The reason why is i was throwing a p1130 code every 500 to 600 miles. Car also felt a lil slugish. So i cleaned the Maf cleared the codes. Car ran great for about 100 miles. Then threw 2 codes! Now the p1128 was showing with the 1130. Is it time for a new Maf?

There are two ways a MAF goes "bad".... the typical 'blown maf' will result in the ABS/PSM lights and CELs...

But a fouled or contaminated maf will fail with CEL and long term fuel trim errors. Often times a cleaning will help, but not fix- for two reasons: 1) they are refouling or 2) the element has been fouling and over time a hard oxide is forming that will not clean off.

When a maf fouls, the surface has a thermal insulating layer- this means the maf is actually 'seeing' less airflow than it really is experiencing. For Example: A new maf may see 100 CFM (I know it is gr/sec, but just for clarity) and output 1V. But when it gets fouled, and it has a minute insulating layer on the element, that same 100CFM will 'look' like 90CFM and the output will be, say, 0.9V.

What this means is that the DME will inject less fuel, even though the motor is getting 100CFM... but the DME is smart, and will use the O2 sensor to adjust the fuel to 'correct' the AFR. This "correction" - for the apparent discrepancy between MAF derived fuel and O2 sensor derived fuel- is a value called "fuel trim". There is a limit on how much correction is allowed. When the DME hits the limit on how much fuel trim is permitted, it sets a CEL code. When I see a 'long term fuel trim limit exceeded" I think, automatically, MAF.

A

PS K&N oiled filters are crap and foul MAFs. No matter what K&N says nor the 'believers'.... Of course you can wash the oil out of them, but then they are hardly 'filtering' those particles that an air filter ought to filter.....

Alex from Sharks is absolutely correct. When I had my old set up, it was exactly what Alex was describing. did you fix it yet? I know they are much cheaper than two years ago.

Have you tried cleaning your maf? Just pop it out, spray it with CRC electronics cleaner (or MAF cleaner, same thing) then re-install. (Personally I'd reset the adaptations, or drive it for 50+ miles with a few start/stop cycles. If after that the codes go away, you have definitively proved it was dirty.

If you just replace it, you won't know what was wrong with it.

(Actually, if you clean it and it fixes it, I'd still replace the MAF- cleaning will never remvoe the hard oxide that builds up- just the loose/oily reside.)

I cleaned her one time. Worked great for over 100miles. Then started throwing a new code on top of the p1130. Now it was throwing a p1128 and the p1130. The Cel light always comes on when i drive it the sit in traffic or a stop light. If that helps.

Yup, definitely fouled MAFs. New Mafs and drop the oiled air filter...

I wonder how much money has been spent buying these intakes with the filters that end up throwing CEL's and ruining MAFs....costing the consumer hundreds of dollars not only for the initial purchase of the intake, but possibly diagnostic runs to the dealership, anxiety over OMG something broke...and the cost of new MAF's aren't exactly cheap. Some of the guys have run thru several MAFs before chasing the problem down to the oil from the CAI filiters. I've read numerous times that unless you're running over 500+ HP....the stock filters work as well as or better than the aftermarket stuff....performance is not enhanced by simply adding a new spiffly looking intake box and filter. Maybe a little more sound feedback, but that's about it.
Granted...there are the supporters, and I'm not looking to pick a fight...but there have been so many posts from folks who have blown MAFs after installing these aftermarket doo-dads...no matter who the manufacturer is. I myself was influenced by the hype and installed one in my first 99 C2...but have since learned a lot by reading posts like this...and am now running a stock intake.
