Hmm...what do you guys think about getting a used car dealer license mostly for leisure reasons? If you are a person who buys and sells 2-3 cars per year, would it make sense to get a used car dealer license so you have access to car auctions, avoid paying sales tax, registration, etc. You could sell an occasional car to offset some of the insurance, licensing fees, etc. I know very little about getting or maintaining a license so if anyone could shed any light on this subject, that would be great.

Thanks,

check your state regs. to get a dealer licence in MA you have to have a lot of a certain size, and a building w/ an office...and there are a ton of other hoops to jump through, not to mention pretty large fees. Dealer plates are also very expensive these days, especially the insurance.

beyond that the auctions are smart enough to weed out this type of fake business by requiring you to send them pictures of your facility and advertisements in local papers, phonebooks, etc... If it were easy and cheap there would be many many people all over it.

Thanks for the info. I'm located in Ca. From what I found, you could be a 'autobroker' Here is the defininition by the DMV,

Autobroker Provide the service of arranging, negotiating, assisting, or effectuating,
for a fee or compensation, the purchase of a new or used vehicle, not
owned by the dealer, for a person(s).

An autobroker does not need a lot but they do need a office. I would have an acutal used car buisness going but it would just be a low volume one with minimal profits. I have my own buisness which I could have a dedicated small room for this buisness. It does seem like there are a bunch of hoops to jump like getting a city license, resale permit, etc. What kind of insurance costs can be expected? I might take one of those dealer classes to learn more about it.

I too have been looking into this and in Fl and AZ, you need a specific size lot with room for several cars etc. I am not sure that an Auto Broker can purchse cars at an auction. You might want to look into this.

Well said Charley.
