buying used cars, problems comes w/ the savings...

I just purchased a 996 turbo used under CPO and I was told that the car went through some million point inspection that included the replacement and repair of all mechanical and aesthetic defects. Guess what? In less than 24 hours, I found a 1) wrinkled dash which the dealer says it's wear and tear, 2) unlockable gas door, 3) missing screw in one of the tail lamps, 4) overspray on the door from 'Velvet Touch' repair of one of the wheels and 5) ding in fender.

most of which the used car sales manager just deferred me to service, and refused to do anything about the dash, the ding, and the overspray. The salesman that worked with me was very sympathetic, but the sales manager was less than helpful.

I'm giving PCNA a call in the morning. I know i'm most likely stuck with all the aesthetic flaws that the dealer refuses to rectify, but it's worth a shot...

I guess this simply adds on to all the other threads from people buying cars used and having them blow up in their faces. I consider myself one of the luckier ones, but it just goes to show that when you buy a used car, yes there are tons of savings that goes w/ it, but never for one minute expect the car to be how the salesman portraits it. Sh*t, even new cars can come with flaws incurred during shipment.

Just a short rant, anyone got anything to add or suggest?

Did you buy the car without looking at it first?

Ah that sucks, sorry to hear. I am wondering too, did you buy the car without looking at it first?
The one thing that catches my attention is the fact that the car was certified. I could see these problems on a car from a private sale, but porsche certified is suppose to stand for an extremely clean example. Correct me if im wrong. Anyways hope everything works out!

I went in to purchase the car at night, so the problems were less than obvious. Lesson to be learned is that not only can you not trust the CPO inspections to be completely thorough, don't expect the person who sell you the car to pull through after the fact.

i didn't go in with alot of expectations out of a used car, so i guess i'm almost half expecting something to go wrong =p how sad is that.

Sorry to hear, that sucks, hope it doesn't ruin the joy of owning a P-car for you. Enjoy the car.

Why did you buy the car at night time?

Buying used isn't that bad, what scares me is when it's so clean you assume they are hiding the flaws.

A used car will have flaws. It's just a matter of knowing them upon purchasing the car AND understanding that it won't be perfect. Looks like everything can quickly be corrected.

The gas door is a broken item so shouldn't that be under warranty?

Hopefully, you are able to get past the flaws and enjoy the car.

I absolutely love the car. It's everything people hyped it up to be and I would never let these minor details ruin an awesome machine = ) I had some friends over @ mind over motorsport drive and check out the car after I purchased it and they all agreed that the car is in excellent mechanical shape.

The flaws are unfortunate, but as I have stated earlier, I almost half expected things to go wrong because it's a used car, and you can't honestly believe the salesman is your friend or anything. I'm gonna get the paint work buffed out, and the rest of the mechanical flaws fixed under CPO. Only gripe is that I'm gonna just have to bite the bullet and live with the dashboard for a while until I can get it replaced.

by the way, the reason why I bought the car @ night was because I had just sold my car that morning and couldn't wait until the weekend to go car hunting . I needed a car to get around. Eitherway, I don't regret my decision, and I think that's the most important thing. Just wished I coulda come out with a GT3 instead = )

It sounds like one or two of those items should be repaired under warranty. The rest of the items make the car imperfect, but in my view, this gives you the freedom to drive it. I find "perfect" cars a lot more taxing to drive, because you worry about keeping them perfect, and it detracts from the enjoyment of owning the car.

This is why I always buy pre-owned cars with remaining warranty. You save a significant amount of money (ie, someone else took the initial depreciation hit) and you get the added bonus of being able to enjoy the car, instead of worrying about keeping it a flawless showpiece. Just my take, anyway...

totally agree. Today I took the car to a friend's body shop and he was able to get the paint restored by getting off the overspray. He even gave me a pair of bumper plugs = )

Gonna make an appointment to go the service department to get the rest of the things fixed.

Anyone think I should call PCNA about the excessively worn dashboard that was not replaced under CPO inspection? or should i just eat the cost?

Cosmetics aren't usually part of CPO coverage, so if the car is out of the original warranty, that's a tough side to take.

I know your car is still under CPO, but is it still under the 4/50? If so, you can probably get the dash repaired under that...but keep in mind if they replace it, you will more then likely get some squeaks and creaks in it. I have a similiar issue with my dash too...looks like it is slightly bubbling...where the glue under the leather has lost its stick.

so just spent some time looking thru the paper work, it looks like that should've been something i ***** about prior to making payment, oh well, lesson learned.

by the way, anyone know if the rear fog light includes both sides or just the driver side? I noticed that only one side lit up, but the dealer said that 01's come w/ only the left side.

thanks for everyone that chimed in, much appreciate it. Glad to be part of the porsche family.

The fog light is on 1 side only. The dash looks like a nightmare to take apart. I'd live with the leather bubble.
