Straight pipes.....
Straight pipes.....
I know it has been discusssed before.. i went over all the previous threads but their seems to be a mix of answers to the following questions that i'm concern about, and hopefully you guys can help out !
-Engine light:Will i get one ?
-Aprox how much power lost should i expect with my mods ?
-2.5' or 3.0'' inches without Cats: which one ?
-How much would a shop charge to get straight pipes ? (Sharky!!)
-Do i have to get a new ECU reflash ?
I don't want to spend to much, since i will be changing it on and off alot because of rents...they will go nuts
Thanks in advance guys!
Enrique

in street driving, you most likely WILL get a light...
The power was great stock...but I have heard that the more power you produce, the more problems people have with straight pipes...really, unless you are tracking, go with a loud standard headers back system...

I agree. Not worth it for a street ride. Too loud and a lot of cabin resonance. As well, a pain to swap back and forth.
DO some of Ultimate Motorworks headers and you'll get more power, not have CEL light and will be much quieter. :-) My 2 centavos.

I went back and forth on whether to do the same thing. I wound up going with the PSI exhaust and love it. The straight pipes sounded great, but they are meant for the track or very infrequent driving (in my opinion). From what I have been told you do not need to change anything in reference to the ecu when doing an exhaust.
oh ya, no ECU changes were needed...
But ya, I really dont think its neccesary at all...and my car IS a racecar...
I would fully suggest/recommend B&Bs Lemans system or the "loud" version...great sound and really nice power...

OK I am sure most here know I have run straight pipes for some time. I love them and the car runs awesome but my car is also a track car.
You do need an ECU flash for no CEL's
My first option was this..... I didnt want to flash and stuff and wanted sound and hp and dont like mufflers. Try fabspeed 100 cell cats and straight pipes, no CEL and no flash needed. Oh yeah it is still loud but with the turbo and the cats it is not as bad.
Also certainly the most cost effective exhaust mod. You dont need to flash. You dont need the exhaust expense, just the cats. Since the fabspeed systems are modular you could add the muffler later if you want.
Also loosing alot of weight, and as said above with the turbos you dont need back pressure like a NA engine.
You do have to consider what I say and then what iLLM3 above says, both very different experiences and that's why this forum is so helpful, you see the full spectrum of opinions and results. And I learned most of my stuff from iLLM3!!!

I agree with everything Tom said except the modular part. I spoke with Jay directly at Fabspeed last week becasue I was hoping to do the straight pipes as well, and then, if I felt they were to loud, just add the mufflers. That is not an option with Fabspeed. As he put it, the exhasut is not backwards compatiable. You can do the full exhaust, and then use the cat bypass pipe, but you cant do the straight pipes and for an incremental cost add the muffler.

Also take my opinion and Tom's differently to your car. I had the FVD straight pipes, one single outlet pipe bypassing cats and muflers bolting straight up to the turbo, i was on stock K16's as well, which could have been a bad combination, not as much airflow being pushed out or god knows, maybe my tuning as well as the K16's.
All i know is trial and error, see what you like best and decide from that

Thanks for that post I did not know that because when it was explained to me by Fabspeed I "thought" I was told YOU COULD do that. And in fact I am sure it is possible but I guess if Fabspeed let everyone do it that way they probably think they would sell less mufflers and make less money.
But in fact since the loud thing isnt for everybody, they should do it the way you want to and I bet they would sell more mufflers, cause quite honestly the straight pipe thing is not for everybody.
