Why the '02 TT is Heavier than the '01
I think the stiffening confusion lies when porsche did their upgrade of the c2 and c4 from 2001 to 2002. The new headlights, increased power and stiffening. The 2001 turbo was based on the updated chassis of the 2002+ NA 996's, had the new style headlights, etc. Hard to believe they would change the chassis stiffness after the first MY of tt and that no one can tell the difference. I bet 996tt's are all very close in weight.
Dock,
I understand what you are saying. Things do get a bit confusing with their publications.
rwm514,
The info I published came from an '02 supplementary publication under heading Body and sub-heading Bodyshell 911 Turbo/911 GT2. I guess that can serve to confuse us a bit more. They are indicating that the same changes were made to the GT2 bodyshell also. Go figure.
Guess the only way to really tell would be to take 2 different cars from 2 different years with identical options and the same amount of fuel, and weigh them on the same set of scales on the same day. Who wants to bother-----not me for sure.
I suggest that with all the confusion, this thread should go into the "who really gives a damn" category. :-)
Amen and amen.

Al -
I will also add that a member of another forum did a part number search on those items listed in that publication and found no different part numbers between the '01 and the '02.
I believe this is just a case of poor proof reading by Porsche and/or poor quality control of the information they released. I believe the '01 and '02 weigh essentially the same, and have the same stiffness.

Traditionally, the 2002 and up cars weighed 100 lbs more.......2001 weighed 3395 with solid spoke wheels, and everything I'd seen in the past the 2002 weighed 3500......with the stereo system (sub-woofers are pretty heay) and glove boxes the chief culprits.

And didn't the later '01 Turbos have hollow spoke wheels?
In looking at the claimed areas changed - there are a few that would be easy to confirm, for example the lateral tube at base of rear seats that Porsche claims that 02 has and 01 does not, also the tubes placed inside the roof framing. I wish I had remembered to look at my 01 when I had my headliner out... Can someone check or remember? I have attached the diagram of the 8 parts in question - are they present or not in the 01's? - that will answer the question...
P.S. Tried to upload image - database error.. here are the two easy to spot items:
Roof frame reinforcement pipe
Seat well reinforcement tube
The other 6 items are sheet metal and would be hard to spot.

Its the same way the LWFW works....a big net loss because of rotational inertia.
You can REALLY feel the difference in how much faster the car revs up now.........1st gear is more useless than ever
I know this is an old thread but I have something interesting in autotrader.com
I copied the page an uploaded to my site.
http://www.floridatraders.net/porsche.htm
Autotrader states changes for the year of 2003 and not 2002. I think the whole weight situation is awkward.

Because it is a higher number (2001 vs. 2002)???
