Wing failure at 0 degrees F?
Wing failure at 0 degrees F?
It was dry out and decided to drive the turbo to as much as possible. My trouble light says wing failure and was wondering if it is normal at 0 degrees F? Why would they build a spoiler that freezes up. It seems to work again but should I take the car in? Are you guys disabling the wing somehow? Does it break after using it in cold weather?
Thanks,
Thanks,
mine broke last week in freezing chicago temps... one side will not go up....

This has happened to many of us, and at temperatures higher than freezing-seems to happen more frequently when the car has been sitting for awhile. I doubt it is "broken", rather, I think it will respond well to a cleaning and lubrication. Extend the wing all the way up using the manual switch (you may need a second pair of hands to jiggle the wing a little if it is stuck), and clean the exposed posts with a metal cleaner. You will probably see some schmutz (that's a techical term
) at the bottom of the posts-that is your culprit. I use Q-tips to get the hard-to-reach bottom edges clean. Then spray the posts with WD-40 (or other lubricant of choice) and manually raise and lower the wing a couple of times to coat the surfaces evenly.

I cant really manually raise mine... it pops right back when I try to lift it.. and it hard to do it.. I dont think spraying wd 40 will help me....

They do not like the cold!
Mine went down on one side (when I parked the car) and the other side
stayed fully up!). When I started it I was able to raise the other side.
when it got warmer (a relative term lately), I worked fine. They are definitely
susceptible to sticking in real cold weather.

I drive my car daily in -10 to -20C weather and luckily no problems. I do carry around lock de-icer and Im sure it might help squeezing a bit on there to keep the ice in check.

mine reads a failure in really cold weather but seems to work fine...i've been reading the posts on here, i figure its normal, but i am going to try cleaning it.
can't believe they would build a spoiler that would have issues with cold weather...i mean, it gets this cold in Germany too.

To really do the job you should probably take the wing off (not too difficult) and blow some compressed air in there while manually having the struts go up and down. A thicker lube would probably work better and possibly some oil that won't freeze.
