"Best" version of the PSS9s?
"Best" version of the PSS9s?
Looking to change the suspension to something a little more sporty. Car is primarily driven on the street, but I plan on doing some track days and DEs in the near future so I think the adjustability will come in handy in the future. Too busy with racing my shift kart and the new baby, but definitely want to hit the track with the 996TT when I get a chance. Anyway, it seems like the PSS9 coilovers are what I want. And from what I've read some people have noise problems with the euro version so I definitely want the US version, right? But then I see that different shops/tuners have their own versions, which I assume include different spring rates. Is that all it is? And which one do I go with? Does it really matter? Should I just order up some PSS9s from Evo or IA, etc. and stop wasting time trying to figure it all out? LOL. Help clear up some confusion for this newbie. Thanks!
The PSS-9's offer a very good package for the money. There are others out there, but given your description of usage I would recommend them. Since the US versions are readily available, I would stick with them to avoid any problems. I have the Euro versions and never had any noise problems but there are those that have. My understanding of the total number of PSS-9 variants is shown below:
My bottom line, I think you will be happy with any of the variants. I am not 100% sure about which baseline (US vs Euro) the "other than US" versions are based so that would be the only thing to check if you consider the "other than US" versions. AWE Tuning has the US versions in stock from what I understand.
If you decide against the Bilstein based units, some other notables (better for more racing, less street) are JRZ and Cross.
Good luck!!
- Bilstein Euro - available through Carnewal
- Bilstein USA - available through AWE Tuning
- FVD (Euro based) - available through FVD
- RUF (Euro based) - available through Weissach

Out of curiosity,
does Koni offer shocks/suspension setups for your 996tts?
In my 914 club, the Koni's are thought of as a better all-around setup because of their adjustability, with some thinking the Bilsteins are just too stiff for the street.
I've got Bilsteins in all four corners myself, though on the teener I had 19yrs ago, it was equipped with Koni's in the corners.
Oh, one more question, how long has the PSS9's been offered?
