Question about ECU reflash

Can someone confirms what part is sent to be reflashed.

Is it 996-618-606 ?

I'am considering a GIAC but change cars fairly often.

Could I buy a standard ECU and change it back if I sell the car and save the re-flashed unit for the future ride.... Providing it is a 2001 to 2005 996/TT I assume.

Thank's in advance for the enlightenments!

Pic of the parts catalog.

mishref is infamous around these parts
It is 996-618-606..

There are two ways to flash the ECU:

1. Remove it and send it off to a tuner.
2. Take the car to the tuner and flash through the OBD2 port.

You can purchase another ECU (flashed/stock) and switch them out.

PorschePHD (Imagine Auto) has a great write up on removing the ECU:

2 questions:

1. The OBD2 flashloader - can you get this with he different programs to switch around yourself? I'm pretty sure you can with GIAC, but not sure about the others.

2. Once you load the "stock" program back in, can anyone ever tell if you've flashed the ECU (like the dealer for warranty claims)?

Thanks

1. I personally haven't seen any flashloaders for the porsche; but apparently they exist.
2. If you flash the ecu (or replace) with the stock unit .. the dealer can't tell.

There are two methods to switching multiple files. The Flashloader does not maintain any files in the FL unit itself. All files are stored on the DME and the FL just switches the files on the DME to the one you want loaded. The Pocket Programmer has physical memory that stores the files, up to 8, in the handheld unit and reflashes the DME with the chosen file. No files are stored on the DME. As for dealer discovery of the files on the DME, my local Porsche tech told me that the PST2 cannot find any of those files , but the PIWIS is a totally different matter. When the PIWIS is hooked up to your car it is like your car is in Stuttgart, all data is networked to Germany or Atlanta if they choose to do so. Kevin

Actually a third as Kevin points out...I have the pocket programmer and did not have to remove the ECU or take to get flashed!

Also not exactly correct...the flash can be detected by someone who knows what they are doing (of course this does not include all P-dealers). It is also very easy to detect if the ECU has been removed!
