Opinions on Tiptronic
I am pretty new to P cars (6months) and tested the 6 spd car first. Liked the power didn't care for the clutch. Then tested a 02 X50 car and purchased it that night! I never do that but I really liked it. Since then I have modded it and now really like it. I have ecu upgrade, 24/18 turbos w/new WG's, Fabspped, BOV's, Greddy boost controller, and a BMC filter. The car only had 7,911 miles on it when I got it and now she has close to 15K; and thats mostly on the weekends! I say drive them both and get what you like you are the one that will be making the payments in the end. Good luck and keep us posted.
Had SMG prior as well, but got real bored after 6 months (like playing video games). After 8 months with a 6MT, I'm still learning how to control the extra hp. For DD or tracking, I'm sure the tip wins out but I felt disconnected with the overall driving experience of a sports car. Manual for sure!
6 speed is the way to go - the 997 TIP may be a little better, but the 996 TIP shift is very slow.

Light clutch like a Honda clutch?
I'm doing my normal research before I drive something, just trying to figure out median price points and chronic problems with the car before I drive one and throw due diligence out the window.

Didn't like it. Drove around a 997S w/ Tip for a week while my TT was in for warranty work. Never got used to the slow shifts in manual mode and erratic behavior of the computer brain deciding when to shift. Buttons aren't in the right place either.
I much prefer the driving experience with a 6MT. I'll echo other opinions that the Tip felt too disconnected.

When I had my Turbo, I thought the clutch was a bit too light. Couldn't really feel the engage point. But I would still take the 6spd over the tip any day. The only thing I would take over stick is a good paddle shifter.
