Why are BMW M5s constantly challenging me?

Lately, my car has been a magnet for BMW M5s. Last week, an E39 M5 driven by a young kid pulled along side of me, then proceeded to bait me to race. Given the disparity in power, I was not inclined to go for it, but after we stopped next to each other at a light and he was revving his engine, I was compelled to light him up . . . . and that is exactly what I did . . . . to the tune of more than a football field. I did not post about it because the outcome was expected and far from praise worthy.

This afternoon, a brand spanking new E60 M5 (white) was baiting me on the highway. Again, I initially resisted the temptation to bite given the disparity in power. He finally raced past me WOT, and I was content to let him go. However, he got caught behind a slower car and, without trying, I passed him in a faster moving lane. He immediately moved behind me and began tailgating me big time. He was right on my ***. Not cool!!! My lane was wide open ahead and I saw that the lane to our right was about to open up. I knew exactly what the M5 would do. As soon as the adjacent lane became available, the M5 immediately moved into the lane and went WOT. In anticipation of the move, I dropped down a gear and allowed him to get the jump, then I hammered it. In no time, I was several bus lengths ahead of him. Shortly thereafter, the M5 again pulled behind me and began tailgating me again. I had enough with the guy, so I moved over and motioned for him to pass. He again went WOT and sailed ahead, but I did not follow, as I already had my kill to savor.

Unfortunately, the race I really wanted did not materialize. I came across a Noble M400 last week, but he did not bite. I also met up with another modified 996TT this evening, but rather than race, we chatted a bit and I invited him to 6Speedonline.

Regards,

Craig

To clarify, I am not posting these kills as a badge of honor. Neither was a fair race between similarly powered cars, and the outcomes were entirely predictable. Rather, I am posting these kill stories because I find it interesting that I am being baited by M5s with some regularity.

Always love the kill stories Craig, no matter how unworthy the opponents are ha. With all of the kill stories that you have posted in the past, I don't think I have ever come across one where you have been challenged.

No need to constantly apologize for a kill story. They are always fun. My philosophy is that I don't care if you challenge me with a minivan full of autistic kids; its on.

Why do they always want to race? Ever been to the M5 board? They think they are driving F1 race cars, not a great sedan with great sedan performance. Dare I say, they are as delusional as the 993 crowd

Not the TT guys, the 280 hp "we are closer to God" NA car owners

Nothing wrong with it if you were, brother. That's exactly what your car was built for; to stomp the daylights out of other street cars. Might as well use it as it was intended.

Good job on the runs.

They want to be able to say they beat a Turbo...Not saying that STI's and EVO's aren't quick, but the kids around here love to try and race. They simply want to brag that they beat a Turbo. Can you blame them....

Craig,
We need a kill or two per month to keep the juices flowing. I don't know what the Noble has for mods, but your car should not have any issue putting bus lenghts on it as well.

ECB is infamous around these parts
ummm they prolly recognize your car from a mag article (LOL). Nah, honestly, they know the M5 is a (kinda fast) sedan and want to "show up" a REAL sports car...

of course they picked the wrong one.

Last year when the E60s first rolled out, one with 4 biz suits rolled up at a light by the SD airport heading to the R.P.L. I see them all laughing and stuff and the driver messing with the wheel while the light was red. I just flipped my variotune to open, 2 of them look over to see whats causing such a ruckus...

i let them get the jump, reeled em in and blew em away. And I only had 600Hp then!

Its def the sedan vs sportscar thing...

ECB, great story!

Craig, I always love to read your kill stories. Like Luis said, "we need a kill or two per month to keep the juices flowing."
