Paint Protection and Clear Bras

OK, first off, I'm going to keep waxing my cars, if for no other reason than I actually enjoy it!

I've got a friend who is on his third Porsche, a new Boxster S, and to my great surprise when I asked him which wax he uses, he told me that he had it "Minged"!! I'm just curious if anyone else has had this, or some other similar paint protection, applied to their Porsches.

What about Clear Bras (and not the kind on your girlfriends LOL)? Who's got them on their cars? I had one on my old car, but it got a bit faded after about seven years so that it was no longer invisible. Since I plan on keeping my car a lot longer than that, I'm disinclined to put a 3M bra on.

Anyway, just curious as to your thoughts/experiences with the above.

Oops, I think this should be in the Off Topic (or General) forum. Mods, could you please move it?

Thanks

Don't know what superfly is on about; clear bra is a mod.
I just had it put on my, new to me, 996TT. I like it and am thinking of getting some more small pieces added. I wax over the film, and the installer did such a good job, it's basically invisible. I can drive without that sinking feeling when I hear sand or stone hitting my hood. Sure the film will get beat up over time but I can pull it off and the paint will be fresh and then I can re-apply some new film. I think in the long run it will be cheaper than re-painting. My 993 never had clear bra and its front shows it's 12 years of road shrapnel.

The way it was explained to me is that the film is a 3 part film. Adhesive layer, urethane layer, and clear coat layer that is the same as what's on the car. I use Griot's Best of Show wax. I was told not to use a random orbit polisher on the film by the call-in-line at 3M. Hand wax only with a micro fiber towel. The installer told me to minimize the edge after waxing, use a q-tip dipped in water and wipe along the edge to remove the residue.

I just spoke with the 3M installer locally. He says that 3M has a new product with a 3 year warranty against yellowing etc. I don't think it was likely to yellow in that time frame anyway, but it's nice to see they're standing behind it. Also, I didn't know that the film was removable so that it could be re-applied at a later date.

How high up did you go with your film (the full 24 inches, or something less)?

I did the full hood, full fenders, full doors, front bumper, A pillars, wheel wells, stone guard and mirrors. Plus I'm going to have some more small pieces added.
