what's the best year for the turbo as far as reliability??
what's the best year for the turbo as far as reliability??
I'm looking for a low milage 01-04 turbo. I'm wondering if I should get an 01 and mod the heck out of it or should I get a certified 04?? I'm a little worried that an 01 is going to cost me an arm and a leg in maintanence..
Is there anything I should look out for on the 01 versus an 03-04 that are common problems?
Assume around 30k miles tiptronic car..
Thanks in advance

i dunno - w/ the silly issues i've had, and with prices what they are, i'd say go 02+. obviously, the more important concern is the car itself; although there's no way i would have been able to identify the issues i've had.

I may seem naive, but all cars have a learning curve. Porsche had a bunch of 996 years to get it right...so less of an issue with the turbo, but it is still possible.
Said another way, I have been burned 2/4 times when getting new cars...both were model year1 cars. So, I go for model year two. In the particular case of the 996tt, given the nature of these cars and the engineering skill of porsche (and testing), I say an 01 is realistically 99.5% of another year..... I would be more nervous about model year one of the ceramic brakes...just me.
Car chassis: not new (996).
Engine: not new (Lemans winner 1998, so reliable....).
Get the car you want and have fun.

O2 and up.
lowest mileage along with strong ppi with no type 2 overrevs.
solid mantenence history.
stock is the safest bet.
try to stay away from a car that is due for scheduled service ($$)
this program served me well
