Reasonable for 30k mile service?

I recently purchased my 2003 996TT with 31,000 miles on it. The used car dealership I purchased it from said it had just been "serviced" but I am pretty sure all they did was change the oil. That means it needs the 30k mile service. I contacted a local independent repair shop that works exclusively on German cars, and they quoted me a price of approximately $1,400 for the 30k service including labor and parts.

Their quote included all of the following parts:

Cabin Filter Particulate Filter
Spark Plugs
Oil Filter
Fuel Filter
Brake Fluid
Engine Oil (Mobil One)
Gear Oil

I recently installed a new air filter myself so I didn't need them to change that. Does this seem like a reasonable price? I am also going to have them install new diverter valves for me at the same time, which they are going to charge me $90 to do.

That's all stuff you can easily do yourself except for may be plugs

The bulk of the charge is 12 hours of labor at $90/hr including the removal of the rear bumper in order to replace the spark plugs. How many hours of labor were you charged for? Sounds like it would only be 1 or 2 hours if it only cost $300.

Here is the estimate they gave me. Should I just go elsewhere, or try and negotiate a more reasonable price? Is the real problem how much they are charging for labor or are they trying to screw me on the parts, too?

i think most dealers charge around $1200 for the 30k service; at least this has been my experience in so cal. I believe they usually quote around $800 for just the spark plug service.

BuddyG, that is an amazing cost for the 30k service; too bad i don't live closer to Michagan. Was it a Porsche dealer?

the price on the 30k service sounds high. the parts prices look okay. I guess Im always shocked at Porsche related prices. Definitely shop around for price on that service. It doesnt hurt. you may save a good deal of money. If you're in atlanta, how about Neil place? Orton perf. Or it used to be called that.

Ok my 30,000 mile service did not include new spark plugs. This is what it included:

Pollen Filter 44.18
Alum Seal Ring .23
Oil-Filter 20.28
Wiper Blade 40.23
Mobil 1 75.00
Seal Rings 1.92

Labor 237.50
Parts 181.84
======
Total $419.34

Not sure what changing the plugs cost, I had that done but
can't find the invoice.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I called one of the local dealerships here in Atlanta and they quoted me $1,150 so I guess I'll stay away from that independent shop I contacted first. The most expensive part of the service is definitely the spark plugs apparently.

Should be about half of that or close to it. It is 4-6 hours to do the plugs. Some 30Ks do not include this and do the filters and oil.

I charge about $600 total parts and labor with spark plug replacement. It takes me maybe an hour to do the plugs.

$562.50 labor only for plug replacement --- 4.5 hours @ $125 per hour to do plugs at one of the dealers in Toronto. Plus all our Canadian taxes, 14%.

I think each shop has a different version of what a 30k service is.

Some shops do the minimum and some shops do more than the factory recommends.

We do the following for a 30k or 3 year service

We consider the following to be a major service.

Plugs.
Pollen Filter
Oil Filter
Fuel Filter
Engine Oil
Gear box oil
Diff Oil
Brake fluid flush complete system.
Coolant exchange.
Power steering fluid exchange ( mineral oil )
Serpentine belt
Diverter Valve service if aftermarket
Or replacement of DV if stock.
Balance all 4 wheels.

A minor 30k service would not include all of the above.

Prices range from region to region and the type of shop you go to. If its a one man show or small shop you can generally get a basic 30k service done for less.
Dealers in So Cal tend to be on the high end of the spectrum.
4.5- 5.5 hours to do plugs is what most shops charge. I dont know of any professional Porsche techs who are interested in doing it for less unless the engine is already out. Good techs need to put food on the table also haha

What ever you do, find a shop you can trust and make sure you are getting what you pay for.

Some charge a little but then you also get very little for the price.

If you are having other work done you can usually get a discounted rate for a major service.

Hope that helps!

WOW! Your 30K service is extensive, half of the services you mentioned isn't even done until 60K. Your service is the most complete I have ever seen which is great but must be very expensive, if I did all that you mentioned, it would probally take me eight hours and I am a 15 year Premier Porsche Tech which means I am pretty fast.

Now, if you offered this service at a good price it would be a no brainer. It is excellent to see that there are shops that offer such a complete 30K service.
