Question for someone with PSE (with switch)
Question for someone with PSE (with switch)
Greetings again!
Read lots of posts on this, but had 2 specific questions that I could not find.
This is a question for someone with the factory Porsche Sport Exhaust with the switch. To simplify, let me use the terms "loud" and "soft."
My question is simply this: when you start the car, is it "loud" or "soft" Just wondered what the "default" mode is.
Just one extra question: When in "soft" mode is it basically like the standard muffler sound--e.g. very quiet.
[I am limiting discussion to this exhaust because my wife has tinnitis from one of the chemo drugs, so need quiet once in a while too.]
Thanks--what a fun site! Just wish I lived somewhere warm too . . .

Mine defaulted to quiet which is probably a tad quieter than the standard 997S exhaust. When I pushed the sport chrono button, the PSE would go loud and the factory cutouts would make the exhaust go quiet between 3500 and 4500 RPMs (approx). The switch was a manual over-ride that made it go to full loud all of the time and over-ride the cutouts even with sport chrono off.
In other words, the default is quiet but if you flip the over-ride switch, the default becomes loud all the time. Technically, it will be in over-ride mode so it's not really the "default" mode.
Edit: Sorry guys, I was posting about my 997S PSE and just noticed that this was posted in the 996 forum.

The cutoff you talk about between 3500 and 4500 is actuall not a result of rpm, but of speed. Porsche built in a "quiet" mode that cuts the exhaust noise at 25mph and turns it back "on" at 40mph - part of a Euro agreement through EU countries to restrict noise in residential areas by cars - guess they thought that was an important aspect for US based cars as well...
it can be removed, so that you have a steady sound from the exhaust - many posts about cutting the speedo wire that feeds info to the exhaust system - your dealer also should know this trick, if you have a good relationship with them...

In default the PSE is on, and when you crank-her-up, you'll hear a slight "burbble" while at idle, and no doubt a tad louder than if you pushed the switch to turn it off (red light on then).
The car though seems to be MUCH more pronounced just at about 3000 rpms.
So think of the button/switch as a PSE-defeat mode.

Thanks again all--if I am correct, after adding the PSE to a 996 that does not have the SportChrono option, the switch will be "on or off" but not tied to speed. Can't wait! (but will wait anyway till after the first of the year . . .)
First of all, none of the 996's have sport chrono. Porsche introduced that option on the 2005 997 cars.
Secondly, if you install the PSE without modifying it, 996Flatsix correctly stated, PSE will automatically switch from loud to quiet when driving between 25 and 40 mph. If you're driving slower than 25 mph or faster than 40 mph it will operate in the loud mode.
The mod to defeat the 25-40 mph cutout is well documented on the internet and can be found with a little digging. I did it in all of 15 minutes. It was probably about 3 minutes of work and 12 minutes of double checking what I was doing to make sure I didn't screw it up.
Huh??????

I am not sure he is getting the correct info. You get a switch, that closes the valves in the muffler so its quieter. In addition to that switch, there is an AUTOMATIC relay that closes the valves between 25-40 mph....this is because of a noise regulations....you can modify this, so the valve only closes with the switch, or if you do not install the switch, will stay open all the time. I think that was what was being said, but in a few different posts....
