Lowering a 996 without paying a ton of $$?
if it's just for looks and you don't drive like a manic <90mph, just get H&R lowering springs you you should be okay
if have extra cash $$, i would get the entire coilover setup, but that's always >$2k installed
if you really want to go cheap, you can always just cut your exisiting springs (but that's like honda civic ghetto ;-) )

i can't believe it's been almost a year since i posted this thread! wow!
just an update, we did put the H&R springs on about 6 months ago. Mostly for the looks and a bit for performance at autox. when we puchase something newer (997) then we'll put the pss10's on it. but for our '99 996, the H&R's work fine for what we're using it for.
thanks all for your info and advice!

Having driven on both good coilovers and just springs with stock shocks, all I can say is once you do put proper coilovers on and adjusted to your preference you will be saying "wow"!! -It will then be completely apparent how inadequate just adding springs are from a handling perspective.
You'll notice much more confidence in the corners / car is much more stable and less washy at high speeds / big reduction in bump steer hitting dips in a fast corner. Those are the highlights of things I noticed immediately.
PSS10's just went up in price. For the same $$ in our GB forum, you can get KWv3's which are much better all around- seriously consider them.

Glad you got something that worked out for your needs. On a side note, anymore CEL issues with the K&N after the ECU reset?HC
thanks for asking! well, we did the reset (for 2 hours) and it seemed to work. all of a sudden, the CEL came back on again. we cleaned the filter off and tried it and it's gone, but something tells me the MAF is going to have to be changed and the filter will be history. aghhh! i have to say though, i notice no HP difference at all. it just helps add to the nice tune of the fabspeed bypass.
i bought some used hr sport springs on ebay for $225, going to install them w/ my stock shocks, then after they wear out, i'm gonna get some bilstien sport shocks. i will do the install my selft and get it aligned at a shop. let u know how that goes!
Cool- keep in mind the Bilstein Sports will run you about $900 for the set of four.
So you're looking at about $1300 all in with alignment, assuming you do the install yourself (which will be alot more challenging vs installing coilovers).
You'll have a better ride than stock with springs and bilstein sports, but IMO you should just pop on the springs for now and in the meantime look for a set of used Bilstein or KW coilovers- Or preferably get in on a group buy for a new set. You can always sell the springs later for what you paid.
