for those of us who aren't DIY people, would you recommend a mechanic performing this task?

If you are not a DIY person yes have a mechanic do it. It took mine 20min to install. The cables if moved will cause adjustment issues, notchy or missed shifting. This can be frustrating for the DIY w/o any real experience. But can be corrected relatively easy.
And to add - this is a must on any stock 996. It makes the car more fun to drive and shifting more precise and accurate as well as a lot shorter throw.
