Is there a quick way to strip the paint off the calipers?
Insert shameless plug here:
Have you guys seen our G2 caliper paint? 2 stage kit with a brush and can of cleaner. It's enough for 4 calipers and runs $38 a set. I'd recommend 2 sets as Porsche calipers are so large. 10 colors. Check it out:

The pictures on the DIY page are very poor so it is hard to see the quality of the finish. Do you have any close up's with higher resolution? Everyone is looking for something differnent. I know of and have seen a few people that went with this product or a similar product their results that were not up to par. I have also heard people with satisfactory results with the paint on product. I think it is a matter of what level of quality you are looking for. Most of the guys I run around with are looking for perfection. When you're dealing with a 60-100K car you don't really want to go cheap on something like this. At least I wouldn't.

Rich,
Good write up... I just read through your page... you guys are using High temp engine paint! I have not heard anyone ever doing this before, so I am not sure of the long term effects other then I am sure it will eventually flake off. Also make sure you are carefull NOT to get any brake fluid on the paint as it will definatley soften and/or eat through the paint. As for the Generic clear coat... Brake fluid will eat right through that stuff no doubt. They do make a high temp clear coat. I think you are better off if you are insisting on using this method. Also the high temp stuff is real heavy paint so it is important to do thin coats in layers. I have used the High temp stuff for lots of projects in the past. Good product but I am not sold on using it for this application. I would aslo be very careful when changing your pads. I have never done a brake job that did not involve getting brake fluid on the caliper. brake fluid on powdercoat would eventually eat through the paint if you let it sit for days. Think of what Brake fluid would do to enamel after minutes or seconds. I would not advise this route If you are going for the economic color change I would think you are much safer with the stuff from Tirerack that is made for calipers. Also one other thing unless you have the etire car masked off I would not want to paint those calipers while on the car you may have some overspray that could blow onto the rest of the car.
No disrespect but this just does not sound like a very good way to change the color of the calipers. If you are looking at all of the different scenarios at hand I would rather keep the calipers black then risk these types of troubles. I am curious to see what the effects are after 6-12 months. It would be interesting to hear please keep me posted.
BTW your decals are priced just right...that is basically what I pay for mine!

I don't recommend how I painted my calipers to anyone! LOL
Well okay...maybe to someone with as little time as I had, and that doesn't want to spend over $30 ;-)
Anyway - if I did want them to be red for the longevity of my car, then I definatley would NOT have done what I did (I would have done it with one of yours), but I don't plan on keeping them red only for the summer and then over the winter experiement with different colors (yellow, silver, dark blue, etc...) as well as other color decals (I have access to those pretty easily LOL)
So, the results for now are exactly what I want - for now.
So - paying almost $12.00 per set of decals huh? Shoot me an e-mail, I can CRUSH that ;-)
laterz...

Sand:
Just so you know, I saw an ebay ad for yellow calipers using your exact pic here. Didn't recognize the seller's screen name. Doesn't look like Robert's car either, at least the way it looks now.
here's the link:

BTW: High speed metal brush cup with a electric mouse sander works great. i completely stripped them down yesterday. There are nooks and crannies, i just didn't feel like getting into, but for the most part, stripped. Prep and taping almost done. Hope to paint today.

Hmmm it could be one of my sets a did a few in Yellow. However I wish I could get $1250 for doing a set of calipers... They can use my picture if it helps them sell their calipers. Even if I did not do them. Thanks for pointing that out though!
well, it came out like **** again. i've done this before and it always comes out great. not sure what the problem is. i do live on the water now, maybe the salt air is doing something to the paint. it's going on really thick and clumping. this is a major bummer. when i did it on my 330ci, it looked fantastic.
anyone know of a service where they'll send you a set already powercoated and then you send yours back after the new ones are installed?
sand, you do anything like that? core swap sort of thing... i need to minimze down time.

Yes I have one set of cores for the C2/C4 My core set is available now. I need 10-14 days to refinish them. I send them to you in the color you specify and you send me your set back. I will send you a PM.
andrew,
it's easier if you just move to LA so we can help you do your mods. Sandoval has done some beautiful powder coat jobs that i would highly recommend. but the do it your self way is much cheap, easier and faster. i did mine. you need some steel wool to corse up the surface, also do not use the brush on caliper paint, that stuff sucks, either use the high temp engine paint or special caliper paint, same **** different packaging. spary from 9-12" away with thin coat, so you have no dripping, wait 5 minutes between coats, use 8 coats, wait at least one hour before adding decals.

tell me about it. wish i could talk the wife into it. you west coast guys are the king of mods
i should have tried spraying it instead of the brush on, but i was afraid of the overspray. i'm so sick of dicking with these calipers, i wish i had left them alone. looks like i'll just pay someone and get it done right. ugggh. call me sandoval. i pm'd you my number.

Decided to do it the right way this time. I ordered a set of yellows from Sandoval. Thanks for everyone's assistance.
I'll post some pics when they come in. Should look sweet shining through the black wheels.
