I think when you turn to position 2 w/o turning on the car, it starts the measurement process?

Mine does it automatically when the key is in the 'on' position w/o starting. It was that way from the time I bought it.

After the car has been sitting for an hour, turn the key to position 2 and watch the electronic display in the instrument cluster.

^ +1, yep that's it. If you don't let the car sit for a while first the measurement can take up to an hour! Normally should take a few minutes.

IMO - just use the dipstick...
