Geez, there is a ton of information on this subject on this board and the other. A search 1st would do yourself good. But there is very little you can do to add HP short of an SC. Unlike the TT's, NA pcars aren't very tunable. Look at exhaust, chipping, intake plenum (recent controversy on this). I think your friend would be told to first work on his driving skills to get the most performance out of his car.

+1 on that-

K&N intake and Agency Power exhaust would be my reccommendation.

Intake, ECU tune and full exhaust - He will feel a noticible difference and its a good starting point. I agree if he just picked up the car that time and money would be better spent learning the car and it's stock limits first before he's able to fully enjoy the aftermarket modifications... Then again though I also understand wanting to immediately make the car "his" 996 C4S.

It's all depend on your friend's pocket. Looking at exhaust, plenum, ECU, intake could run up the bill in the high 4K's and HP gains is minimal but if he's willing to spend 10K he can get substantial HP gain. He can run down a stock TT easily.

you know the more I think about it in reference to "most beneficial mods" on my car, I would have to suggest suspension upgrade as a good first step. Getting a good set of coilovers like KWv3 or JIC would do a lot to improve the overall performance / looks of the car as well as daily driving enjoyment. JMHO.
