Unhappy Suspension install questions for a C4S

Guys, how many of you have installed coilovers on your C4S??? So i tried to do it myself, but ran into a roadblock.

Does anybody know how to remove the front axle? It seems the factory makes it impossible to remove by gorilla torqueing the locking nut.

Does anybody know of any tools or techniques to remove the locking nut?

Ball joint removal tool, How much does the special porsche tool cost, and where can i get one???

Any help is greatly appreciate fellas! Ride safe.

Dean

dean,

Torque spec on that axle retaining nut is 320FtLbs. A real b---buster. You can use a breaker bar with pipe lever and I would apply some mild heat to the bolt at same time after some careful application of WD40 t othe threads.

Good luck!! demosan

Good 1/2 air impact easily loosens front axle nuts. But only back the nut off about 1/8 inch so the axle can't move too much and then use a heavy plastic dead-blow hammer on the end of the axle. It will pop when it comes loose. Factory manual says that you should replace the nut once removed.

I am just finishing my own install of coilovers right now. I had the front diff out to replace seeping side seal (it takes less than an hour to drop the front diff. No need to remove the driveshaft either, but you'll probably need a helper or the use a tranny jack like I did). With the axles out I found that the front suspension will easily droop far enough to allow the struts to be replaced w/o needing to seperate the ball joints. I used a 3~4 ft length of pipe to pry the lower control arm down until the strut cleared the fender.

I've borrowed a 3/4 inch drive torque wrench to re-tighten the new axle nuts, but haven't gotten to that step yet; it's about 4 feet long! I'm not sure how to keep the axle from turning while you tighten the nut. I'm thinking to finish tightening them by remove the wheels' center caps and install the wheels so that I can have someone hold the brakes...

I was wondering the same thing when. Let me know how you were able to tighten the axle nuts again. Also how much was the replacement axle nut? Good luck

Here's how I tightened the new front axle nuts on my 2000 C4 coupe 6 sp. Wife stood on the brakes while I wrenched. We had the engine running for the power assist, but in hind-sight this was probably overkill. If you duplicate this process be sure that you keep the wrench away from the side of the fenders…

FYI - I used a deep x 1-1/4 inch 6pt socket.
