For under $30k, I'd probably go for a used Infiniti G. Lucky kid, as long as he appreciates and realizes how privileged he is.
Wash U.....I hear what you are saying about the car....maybe I should "encourage" him to keep his '03 A4....it has been a good car up until the past half year or so...and he's going to be too busy to drive anywhere anyway!!!

if you're footing the repairs bill, get him a teutonic car. if he's footing the repair bill, get him a Toyota.

What's wrong with a 2003 A4? He won't be driving much anyway, just to the lab and library. First year anatomy and physiology- that's a b!tch. Get him something when he graduates with his MD. The A4 will be 10 years old by then.

He did good!!! Wash U is one of the most selective schools and is rated one of the hardest to get into, usually....The A4 is a great car, and has served him well....it's just been starting to need expensive maintenance....I was thinking that a certified used car with warranty would be a smart investment....but there are a lot of good points here that make me want to re-think that.....and...how can I live vicariously through my son without getting him a cool car??

exactly! ive only been out of grad school for a year and a half now and i know exactly what it means to have an awesome car! hes obviously living a good life in the way that a parent would want him to be..im sure he has his fun but he obviously stays within his limits and got into an amazing school. for all his tough work it would almost be punishing him to get him a 'drab' car only because 'he is only driving b/w a lab and a library'....as with most of us....at this point i wouldnt care if i had a civic or somethin to commute to work with but knowin i have my fun toy at home is enough to make me happy.....and even if he hardly drives and is in the lab or library most of the time..who cares..hes happy knowing that he has a audi/bmw/benz/porsche/whatever out there....a constant remind of how much his parents appreciate all his hard work and effort!

No way is a 4 year old Audi a "drab" car. Jesus, you guys are spoiled. Obviously your kid has his head on straight, buy him whatever you feel most comfortable with. Just make sure he's studying for his boards (grades really don't matter that much, Step I will make or break his residency apps). If I could do it over, I'd start reading First Aid for USMLE Step I on day 1 of medschool.
