It really depends on what you want... I test drove a Cayman S pretty extensively before purchasing my C4S - true, the interior is more refined... the size is perfect (probably what the 911 should be, size-wise)... the handling is super sweet...

The Cayman is the true "sports" car. The 911, in my opinion, is 50/50 sports-car/GT. A little bit larger, a little bit faster, and without any sacrifice in fun or handling. Well, you see what I bought...

Plus, I just liked the 911 better. When I got in the Cayman, I remarked "this is pretty awesome" and when about my business of test driving. When I would drive C4S I just had a ****-eating grin, ear-to-ear - the whole time. Well, even now.

I definitely agree... the C4S looks much better stock v. stock. I mean, look at that ***! And I'm a boob guy...

Speed doesn't really matter, neither is as fast as the Turbo or 550. I'm looking for fun.

EDIT: If I remember correctly your 911 isn't great in the snow either.

I would throw a 997S in the pool of choices. Either way get the real deal if you can

Just go drive them. I did, back to back on the same road, same day. I loved the C4S, but it didn't "sing to my soul" like the Cayman did on twisties... Bought the Cayman on the spot...

I had a 2006 Cayman S and now have a 2002 C4 Cab. I drove the Cayman S all winter long here in Northeast Ohio. Put Blizzaks on the 18" stock wheels and it went anywhere I wanted it to go with ease!
I cannot speak for the 996 C4's winter driving capabilities. I've only had it since spring. Given that I also have a Cayenne S, I'll most likely store the 996 Nov--March. I do have pals who drive their 996 C4 in the winter. Most have Blizzaks and the car handles very well. When the snow is up to your a__ you'll have a problem with either the Cayman S or the 996.
It's a toss-up as far as winter driving is concerned. Your real question is do you want a classic 996 C4S or a newer Cayman S. I imagine you'll get lots of encouragement from the boys and gals at the Caymanclub.org. You might be happier with the Cayman S if the car is a year around everyday driver. I'm happier with the 996 given that it's a summer only driver!
Happy shopping!

I would take the c4s even if I lived in the mojave desert. There is no comparison between these two cars in my opinion. One of them is a wide body 911 for heavens sake and if it has a PSE, its one of the most ferocious sounding cars out there. I prefer the interior of the 996 as well, its focused on the guages, not the head unit and it seems more raw... In terms of performance, well, there are cars that can out perform both for less money.

And have you disconnected the sound cut-off from 2-4k rpm to leave on loud position at all times? No words can explain how intoxicating that is. BTW, I used to read your posts when I was a lurker back in the day....you are one funny guy....beautiful car as well.

yes, i do have it on loud full time.

the balance is the real beauty of the 911. the exhaust PSE ... it's loud in the right moments, sections of the rev range. the growl is one of a kind. really. and the thing is, the turbos don't sound as good. thx, bud.

cayman what?

Tough choice. The C4S has more power and will be better in the winter, but the Cayman will be more fun at the track.

Do you need the back seat? That could be a tie breaker.

Don't tell anyone here I said this, but Cayman S!

That will be my next car. I had a boxster before the 996 and miss the sportiness of the mid engine 986 and hope to be in a 987 cayman S soon.
