Always been dreaming about owning a porsche and just got one.

My question to you guys is: Do you guys rev high to start to go to 60 mph mark with shortest time?
I tried to start with revs under 1500 and never managed to get a "powerful" start. I notice that it goes faster in the 2nd gear.
But looking through the manual, their graphs show starting at 2500 rpms. Is that how high rpms are at start?
And which gear would be by the time you hit 60 mph?

I used to have a manual Maxima many years ago and used to get it to start with lower rpms with reasonable results.

Any advice would be appreciated...
If you got a 911 to be a 0-60 champ, you're gonna be disappointed. It's not a great sprint car.

Don't waste your time dropping the clutch to get off the line fast. You'll ruin your clutch, transmission and tires.

Lastly, IIRC, you can hit 60 in every gear but 1st.

Clutch in, rev to 6900, let the clutch fly while holding the throttle open and let the insanity ensue

my father asked me this same question after driving the car for a while. he said all of the gears felt strong except for 1st, it was very slow off the line.

after looking through the manual, i noticed that first gear is a very tall gear. in fact it will go to a little over 60mph before redlining. i'm guessing porsche did this to optimize 0-60mph times.

the rest of the gears are pretty short

That's because you are probably still trying to drive it like a front engine car. Go to some DE / DS events. It's not the car that's scary, usually it is the driver.. LOL - I'm mostly speaking from my own learning curve..

Hey guys...
thanx alot for all the advice each one has given.
I am honored by getting so many responses in just few hours.

Reading through all of the responses I got to the following conclusions:

1) These engines probably could handle higher revs to start with than the rest of "ordinary" cars. So I could let my fear of higher revs ease off.
2) The courses would be a nice idea. First i would spend money getting winter tyres (and wheels).
3) I did not take any pictures yet. But soon will post some.

But overall I am happy that I joined this forum and have a great source of advice.
As far for my ID, I think everyone thought that porsche911 would be taken and never tried to ask for it. I was naive enough to try and got it.

will be back with some more basic questions soon.

FWIW, I was just kidding about my response. Please be careful launching your car. The clutch and tranny's on these cars are not exactly bullet proof. The clutch is designed to slip to avoid damage to the tranny during hard launches. From what I "heard" a really hard launch results in your car rolling very slowly while the engine is bouncing all the rev limiter, all combined with a lovely burning smell. I actually heard a rumor about two Porsches side by side at a stoplight in Mexico where the exact same thing happened to both of them during a moment of adolescent stupidty

Get it rolling as quickly as you can, then hit as hard as you can without lighting up the tires. Start thinking about shifting out of first early. It's short and you'll run out of gear quick. I try to get into second right away.

i was about to say.. are you sure your response will get you anywhere except to the service department and a rather large clutch bill
