RMS / Clutch Question
RMS / Clutch Question
Back story
Bought a CPO 2002 back in May of 2008. Last month when I installed my new exhaust I noticed that the tranny looked like it was leaking, wet oil on case, but no drips. Then over the past couple of weeks I have started noticing a couple drips here and there.
So I took it into the dealership for warr repair and this afternoon called to get a status. They said it was the RMS and they were in the process of replacing. I then inquired about my clutch - if it's nearing the end of it's life - may as well replace it now with the tranny out.
The dealership told me that based upon the computer system, the clutch was replaced 2 mo before I purchased. I am guessing they did it as part of the certification process.
My Question
When a dealership/independant replaces the clutch - do you have to replace the RMS at the same time? Or can you reuse the RMS?
If you can't reuse the RMS and it was replaced - then why would I have a failure after 6-8 months?
Thanks

I highly doubt the dealer took on the expense to swap out the clutch with new. Certifications don't mean jack ****. It's all about the bottom-dollar for car dealerships... especially so.
You don't have to do anything, but you get two jobs done for one in a sense by putting in a new seal while swapping out the pressure plate, flywheel (clutch).
I'd do it all at once and forget about it.

To answer your question directly re: do you have to replace the RMS when a clutch replacement is done, the answer is NO. If the RMS or Intermediate shaft seals were not leaking, then the clutch replacement could have been done without either seal replaced. However, if there was the slightest of evidence of any leakage, as Ben stated it is a no-brainer to replace when transmission is out. RMS seal is only $10 and labor to install is minutes.
You should ask the dealer to ensure the "new" clutch plate has not been compromised as a result of the RMS leak, otherwise you could have clutch problems ( slippage ) in the near term.
Good Luck with the repairs and glad to hear you have the CPO to fall back on.

It's just the nature of the 996 problem with the RMS. There's no rhyme or reason to how long they tend to last. I've already replaced mine and went ahead and did the clutch plate while they were in there. I'd probably replace the plate everytime if it happens again.
