$30-50K. What P car would you get?
I moved to the 2002 C4S from a 2003 Boxster S. Definitely more power and feels more planted, but I do miss the nimbleness (is that a word?) of the Boxster. I also got tired of the convertible top after a couple years.
The C4S had all the options I was looking for (PSE, Aluminum trim, white dials, BOSE, CD changer, heated seats), so all in all, very happy with the purchase. No problems so far.

If price was not an issue, I would get the 997 also. for me, price, mileage, and condition were factors.
Well, this Porsche buying research is a lot more involved than I'd thought ! This will be my first Porsche and I originally wanted a C4S (family friend had one...loved it). However, there are so many P cars out there in the LA market that I have way more choices than I'd anticipated. I'm sure I'd be ecstatic with any 996 Porsche and in some ways I don't know if I should get a c4s or turbo straight out of the box (what does that leave for later )
I can spend between 30-50K. c4s seem to be 35-45K, c2 are 25-35 and turbos are 45-55K. I'll most likely be getting a tiptronic due to LA traffic so perhaps the turbo makes the most sense. I'm wondering if the tip eats up a lot of the c2 and c4s performance? And then there is the reliability issue of the engines vs the "bulletproof" turbo engine. I loved how the c4s sounded, how do the c2 and turbo compare?
Sorry, I'm rambling but what would you guys do? Thanks!

I'm in SoCal (OC) and have pretty much the same criteria as you do (down to the Tip for La traffic issues)! All I can say is that the hunt is fun. I've narrowed it down to a handful of cars I need to go look at.
Happy shopping and make sure you report back on your findings! I'll do the same.
BTW, there was a 2001 Turbo, White/Metropol Blue/Tip on eBay (owner was in Laguna) a few weeks ago with 12,900 original miles that sold for $49k, so your ranges are in-line with the market. This was a 3 owner car with a clean carfax but the last owner got it Porsche certified (still had warranty to 11/08).
Ha ha ha, lakerholic, that's funny man. Thanks for the info on the White one...I was waiting to see if he would lower his asking price...didn't realize it had sold. Good to know though. He was asking 52900, I'm surprised he got 49 for it. Still, white is super nice! Are you considering out of state cars? I was until I realized it would probably cost grand extra to fly out and title and smog check. I'll PM you if I see any good ones. I was close to buying around 45-50K but honestly with the markets freaking out...now I want to wait for 40K
just avoid the 03 996. i bought one off lease and spent 7K in repairs in 9 months only to have gearbox/synchro issues after spending all that dough on a bunch of other problems. i got rid of the car and am miserable in a bmw z4
