I have noticed a different sound when cold, but I don't think it's a popping sound. Mine has what I would describe as being a little raspy when cold, and that goes away when warm. Is this what you are talking about?

i think backfire is the right word.

but when warm it goes away to a nice PSE sound.

One man's popping is another man's gurgle! Love that gurgle when decelerating!!
