Popping sound from speakers

I notice an occasional popping/crackling sound coming from my speakers occasionally. Sometimes with the system in mute, other times with it on. Any thoughts about what to check?

2001 C2 cab
radio is CR220 with the dynamic/dsp option.

Sounds more like an intermittant short (less likely) or a loose connect on the back of the speaker (more likely).

If you're up to it, remove the speaker, check the connects and the wiring behind it. Be sure it's not loose or getting pinched somewhere between the mount and the door jamb.

If that doesn't work, it's probably a failing speaker.

Outside chance, but it could be interference from your cell phone. If your cell phone is close to the head unit, or any of the wiring connecting head/amp/speakers, you'll get these little warbles from time to time as the phone checks in with the tower.

I chased the same thing before I found it was my cell phone (Nextel). I would put it on the shelf below the radio, and when it got the signal, the speakers cracked. It was less bad in the door pocket, but would still do it at times.

To test the cell phone hypothesis, have someone call you on your cell phone while you're in the car with the volume turned up on a quiet signal (turn on NPR if that's your taste - talk radio lets you hear it easily). About 1/2 sec before the phone rings, you'll hear the sound pretty clearly.

If you hear nothing, it's probably something else.

That's it! Gotta luv this forum

I have confirmed that it is my cell phone. I do store it under by radio in the little shelf. Sure enough, move it elsewhere and all is well. Thanks to all.
