Knock-off/replica wheels
With so many used sets of BBS, Fikse, OZ, Champions wheels out there and in good condition I bet you could find something that constitutes an "upgrade" over stock and still be within a few $$ over cast replicas.
Someone beat me to a nice set of Fikse Profil10 with new rubber for $2600 here locally last month. I don't think there is a much better type of deal than that when you want to upgrade. Keep looking.
Wheel Dynamics did have those 18x11 GT3 reps last year that were interesting but I could not get myself to pick them up.

Following your logic, it would make driving in the city more dangerous with replicas than on the track.
On the track you get smooth road surface, on the street you get speedbumps/potholes where it could cause a poorly made wheel to bend or crack.
There's also medic ready at the track, whereas on the street you have other drivers around you and no medic in sight.

I would be willing to try a cheaper wheel for around town, but not a chance for the track.

Knock off - Being replicas
Name brand- OEM, BBS, Forgeline and other known aftermarket makers etc...
Sure, but what about what I would consider "lower level" name brand wheels, such as Enkei's, Rays Master Piece's, maybe SSR's, etc.?
my opinion has always been you spent so much money on the car...PORSCHE the name has brand, a reputation and a legacy to it. It is heritage etc. A true sports car....so why would you put $1500 wheels on it?
If you cannot afford real, quality wheels..then just wait and save up. Like someone said, just surfing this very site within 3 months I will guarantee you would find a deal on some nice used wheels.
I mean we are not messing with a 90 Honda here...you are driving a 911...have some pride in ownership. How about stereos? Would you yank you the OEM radio and put in a AutoZone KRAGAR CD player in there? Maybe you would...I personally would not.
Another example...when I used to RENT a home..my little 1 bd 1ba little duplex. I shopped at IKEA...its a rental..not permanent and not MY home. As soon as I moved into my condo that I OWN....I never stepped into an IKEA...wanted at least a couple steps above since this is my home that I own and want some decent stuff in there.
When it comes to wheels its not purely looks...and money. Pricier wheels are simply better made and will enhance the car.

No Names are fine.
i'm not going to waste time reading all the responses to this. i have no "name wheels" and have put many miles on road and track and they are great. they've driven perfectly from day one and the rep was awesome to work with. i've had porsche guys ask where they came from and suggest i must have been $6-8000. I paid $2500 with tires. and my car has been in Panorama ads. not sure why. they pulled the image from the wheel rep's site.
the people who lobby for authenticity are suffering from buyer's remorse.

and who cares if they're real or not? i for one, can't tell. but i know the difference between a Ferrari and Fieroarri.
for dedicated track use, i can see the reasoning for BBS or whatever.

Look at what happens to chinese wheels on the 3rd picture.

this attitude seems to be dying off as our 996 cars tank in value.
I have run the replica's with no problem for 3 years and everyone says they look great. I remember this board proclaiming back in the day that my car would instantly blow up if I put on replicas.
You can buy very nice replicas like mine for $600 for set of 4 in 18 or 19" off ebay.
I was glad to save the money for other things, and when I part it out, I will still come out way ahead of "real wheels."
