changes for 02 model?

Hi,

Besides the cosmetic differences is there any functional difference the pre -02 models ( 99-01) and 02+ models.

Do they still drive/ride the same?

The pre 02 have the 3.4 instead of the 3.6. Supposedly the 3.4 isnt as reliable and its about 15-20hp less. If you dont have a 6 speed, the pre 02 use a different tiptronic. Also, if you are in a pre 02 Cab, there is more road noise due to the plastic rear window.

Here is a partial list of some of the updates...

- 20 extra hp (24 more than the '99)
- more torque at a lower rpm (thanks to VarioCam Plus)
- Better aerodynamics (20% less front lift and 40% less rear lift)
- 20% stiffer chassis
- improved interior
- improved oiling (revised pan and baffles for better high g performance)
- improved engine cooling (the newer cars run cooler as a result)
- better fuel economy (1 mpg, but with $2.50 gas every bit helps)
- improved suspension (reinforced strut towers, revised springs, shocks, bushings, and sway bars).
- revised exhaust (better sound)
- only a 55 lb weight gain over the '99-'01 cars

I think what Houston said is about it! Handling could be different? I'm not real sure though. Engine is the biggest change. Faster too I believe.

Nothing wrong with the earlier cars IMHO. Keep in mind the '02-'04 cars sell at a pemium over the earlier cars as a result of the changes, so expect to pay a little more.

In my opinion the advice to buy the latest Gen you can afford is generally pretty good.

Good luck

From the sales '02 brochure: ...headlight system derived from the 911 Turbo. More discreet is the careful reshaping of the front and rear fenders, bumpers and air dam. The result is 25% less lift in the front and 40% less lift at the rear for improved high speed stability.... Reinforcements to the body structure have resulted in a 25% increase in torsional rigidity for crisper response and enhanced agility. The standard 17" wheels weigh almost eight pounds less than the previous design, while the optional 18" wheels are lighter by over 24 pounds. The front air ducts have been reshaped to increase the flow of cooling air to the radiators by 15%"

You also get 20 more HP, a glove box, better cup holders and a glass rear window in the cab. I test drove a number of cars and spent a few $$ more for an '02. You could definitely tell the difference when you drive them back to back.
