Help me please identify that porsche gearbox!

Hello Guys!

I would ask for your help. I had bought that porsche gearbox long ago for a race car project, but I don't know, in which Porsche 996 was it. As I remember they told me 996 porsche carrera4. I searched on net for porsche gearbox codes, but hadn't found nothing about the "new" gearbox codes (from 2001).

Could somebody help me how can I identify?

Here are two pictures, one how it look like, and one from a long serial number looking number. I have found some other numbers too on the housing, but I really don't know which one is the gearbox code.

I hope, somebody can help me.

Thank You

Peter

From your picture, the tranny id is G96001022587. The important part being G96001.

G9600 = Transmission type (2wd 996 as installed though 2001 model year, would be G9601 for 2002 through 2004/5. The later '01' series are stronger)
1 = open differential (if it was a '2' it would be limited slip)
022587 = serial number

Gear Ratiios

1st = 11:42 or 3.82
2nd = 20:44 or 2.20
3rd = 31:47 or 1.52
4th = 37:45 or 1.22
5th = 41:42 or 1.02
6th = 44:37 or 0.84
Final Drive = 9:31 or 3.44

Fill capacity of gear oil = 2.7L

Also, if you are using this for something other than a rear engine configuration, the differential will need to be re-worked. Otherwise, you will have six reverse gears and one forward gear.

Thank you for the fast response, and the identification.

If I understand right, it was made in 2001? What was the highest horsepower engine, where they used that type gearbox?

Do you, or anybody have experience, how much torque, and horsepower can it take before falling apart?

Yes, it would be used to rear engine configuration. I bought that for convert my audi 5cylinder engined car, to rear wheel drive, but that converting project look like would be a never ending story, if some day I start it.

Sorry, I see I did not spell 'through' properly.

As far as I know, it is not possible to tell what year it came from. Your transmission could have have come from a 1998-2001 car.

I am confused. Are you putting an engine in the trunk/boot of your Audi?

No. The plan was to build a steel pipe frame with the engine placed at the rear,with race suspension, and with custom plastic body. Only for track race use.

Today I am not so sure, I will ever start that project.
