I think if you go to a dealer you get a two year warranty. Is that right? If so, that is what I would do, but maybe I'd shop for a lower priced dealer. My RMS and IMS have been replaced twice.

 

Update: Dropped the car at RMG in Sunnyvale (Bob Grisby is my trusted mechanic)
He called my extended warranty, got an appraiser to come in the afternoon and got the job approved, all in one day ;-) Kudos to him...

Based on overwhelming recommendation (from pretty much anyone I asked), I am having a new clutch installed while we're at it.

Should get the car back in a couple of days. Riding my wife's motorcycle to work in the meantime.

So if you have a tip and need the RMS replaced, it's just $800? Interesting how the mere possibility of an $800 repair has decreased the resale value of my car by several thousand dollars.

 

I bought it from Porsche of Fremont (in the Bay Area).
It is a 3rd party, called "Total Protection Plan", the administrator is Prizm Administrative Solutions, Inc.

BTW, a quick unrelated question. I just saw that you added the bottom protection plate to your engine. I just ordered one!! Do you happen to know the length and type of bolts to use to secure it to the engine? My part guy didn't know.

 

^ it uses the existing bolts that hold some of the hoses to the motor. When you get the protection plate, just hold it up under the motor and align the drain plug with the hole... it's real obvious which bolts to back off and use. 10 min job tops

 

Sadly, RMS leaks are one of the least of the car's worries Grenading from losing an intermediate shaft failure is probably a lot more of a problem!
