Does the dealer have to perform the 15k service?

....or can I have a d-r-a-s-t-i-c-a-l-l-y less expensive Porsche shop (not licensed for warranty work, but I have no faith in the dealer to get it right) do it and stamp the log book?

I understand that the 15k service is pretty much a glorified oil and filter change, but I'm concerned about problems later on with warranty work if the 15k wasn't done by the dealer.

Background - I'm convinced that sooner or later I'll need a new engine, and I don't want to prejudice that claim with not having an approved dealer perform the service.

TIA,

Paul

Orient Express is infamous around these parts
Do it yourself

it is extremely easy. After you complete it, fill out the section in the maintenance book to show that you did the work, and save your materials reciepts.

Here are the instructions and parts list for the oil change

Here are the instructions for the pollen filter change

The myth that only dealers can change your oil or your warranty will be voided is in the same league as the one about getting pregnant from sitting on a public toilet seat.

What's convincing you that sooner/later you'll need a new engine? Are you abusing it?

I'd do some research to see if any non-authorized maintenance work has been challenged by Porsche under warranty first.

Orient Express:

Thanks for the reply, I may well do it all myself. BTW, I *can* get pregnant if a boy puts his thingy in my belly button, though, right

Collin:

My engine has been a bit weird for a while now. I've always had the smokey start-up issue, but I know that's normal, so I'm not so worried. What is abnormal is an intermittent phenomenon where, if I accelerate at WOT through 1st and 2nd, then shift to 3rd (normal shift, no power-shifting), sometimes I'll get about a couple-of-seconds-long plume of oil smoke from both tailpipes. We're talking Takuma Sato clouds. I can't reproduce it, but it happened last weekend on the track, and I had to pull into the pit lane to see if I was leaking oil (which I wasn't). Yesterday, something new happened. I was accelerating from around 3k rpm in second, and a yellow warning light flashed on the dash for a second (I couldn't read it because it was in my peripheral vision), and engine power was interrupted. I'm about 99% sure it wasn't PSM, because a) there was no brake intervention, and b) at 3k rpm in second gear, I just don't have the torque to break loose on dry roads.

I don't abuse the car. Every down-shift is rev-matched, I roll on the gas (I've always been a smooth driver), and around where I live, traffic is bad enough that I couldn't drive like a hooligan, even if I wanted to.

Every time I go to the dealer, I ask them to look at it, but they say there are no obvious leaks, so everything's fine.

So, that's why I suspect there's an engine swap in my future. That and two RMS leaks so far. Methinks I got a first-Friday-in-Oktoberfest build.

PMac,
Scott from Houston had this same track issue with his C-2. If he sees this post, he may want to chime in on what his problems were. Scott??
