Dharn55 Well here's hoping I'm the lucky one. I'll pull the cooler off and test it. Thanks very much for the detail and pictures. This is my first experience working on a Porsche as I just bought it in November. All my previous experience has been on domestics. It's all just nuts and bolts, right? Thanks G

Oil / coolant intermix problem

Dharn55
I took the oil cooler off and had a local shop test it. They said it was done, so I replaced it, but still getting more oil in the coolant. Looks like I will be removing the engine and heads. I have gotten some quotes from a couple of shops to R&R the engine and heads, so now I'm trying to decide whether to do the work myself, so my question is what special tools will I need to purchase to complete the work. I have a good set of mechanics tools, but nothing specific to Porsche. Thanks for any advice you can give.

PM me your email and I can send you a lot of info and pictures. There are a couple of tools required, some of which you can fabricate yourself for a couple of bucks. I have a dimensioned drawing for the main cam hold down tool. Made mine in a vise. The bottom line is that the labor will set you back a couple of thousand dollars if some one else does it. If it is the typical crack at cylinder #1, inside exhaust valve seat, then it is pretty easy to fix. I know of several others besides me that have now fixed this crack. There are a couple of other potential areas for leaks that I can outline for you. Look forward to helping you all I can.

Thanks Dharn55
I don't have 15 posts yet so I'm not allowed to send PM's. I'm not sure how else we can exchange info through this forum. Any ideas?
Thanks

As you have been reading, there are several possible problems that might cause oil to get in the coolant. The first thing I checked was the oil cooler, but after replacing it, oil still kept coming, so now the engine is coming out tomorrow. I haven't removed a porsche engine before, but with dharn55 and others help it doesn't seem to difficult. If you usually do your own car repairs, then go for it, save yourself $$$$ and get to know more about your car.

Cylinder 1 cracked head

Hey guys I've had a cracked head for a while and I've thought about every option available to me. There isn't any oil in the coolant. But there IS coolant in the oil. The CEL also flashes on startup sometimes. Any info would be of great help. I would like to fix this cracked head and get back on the road. It has been 4 years since Porsche diagnosed the crack and the car has been sitting in the garage ever since. Does anyone know how to repair this crack? I'm dying over here man!

Some people have said the water pump impeller fails and the little plastic pieces get lodge in tight places. This now will create how spots and cause cracking.
That is just one theory I had read.

I'm not sure, it is a common problem on these cars. Most likely overheating.
