Want to upgrade to HD radio in 996

I went to a car radio place yesterday and they educated me on the difficulty of upgrading to an aftermarket HD radio. Yuck, $1200 for all the work and parts, for bypassing the existing amp with accompanying crossover networks and feeds to speakers from the old amp under the hood. Does Porsche or anyone have a simpler way to do this? Like a new HD radio that integrates easily into my 10 year old 996 Cab? Thanks.

which head unit do you have? I added an aux input and can connect an ipod or my blackberry to my AUX input. You can probably find a portable HD radio with a headphone jack and go that route. total cost was around 40 bucks and it took 20 minutes to install

Sounds like you have a 99... would be worse if you had 03 or newer.
1200 doesn't sound too bad for everything, depending what head unit you are looking at.
Alot of folks have gone with double-din setups, like Kenwood Excelon DNX 8120 or similar (I think there is a 9xxx out now)
These will give you a nice size screen, touch screen, bluetooth, mp3, nav, etc all in one. But just the headunit is probably over 1200.

Search the forum and you'll find plenty. Also check out renntech.org. More technical info there in case you want to give it a go yourself. (but for finding out about cool head units, right here is probably your best bet)
