Question Should I buy a 996?

Hi,

I'm considering buying a 996 (98 plate) and am a bit worried about the maintenance cost.

I seen some ads selling cars saying that 3.5k (pounds sterling) was spent on the last service, or a new engine was put in after 3 yrs.

Is this right? If I buy the car for the best part of 35k (pounds) will I have to be prepared to pay 3.5k per year in general maintenance and every 5 yrs replace the engine?

Sorry for how dumb the question sounds but I'm completely new to the supercar world - I've been a porsche admirer from a yound age and after 8yrs of saving I'm finally ready to buy one !

If a 996 is really that expensive is a boxster any cheaper?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Johnny

I cant speak for all but I can say I have found pre 02 which in the states is 99-01 3.4L 996 have had less major problems such as engine and tramsmission, in 02 and on Porsche upped the 996 from a 3.4L to a 3.6L and I have heard of many problems with RMS leak and transmissions that have been known to pop out of gear, none of these cars are obviously invincible to problems but thats my knowledge of 996 problems, best of luck with your search and purchase.

Bite the Bullet once in your life
I was considering pre-owned....but was also worried about maintenance cost. How can you own a car that you're going to be always scared to drive to due to maintenance cost.

You might as well buy a Honda and make it go fast.

If I were you, since you've saved some money. Bite the bullet and buy the car of your dreams, you only live once. It would suck if all you do is repair the car and drive it for 30% of the time.

Just my. $.02

Talk to experts

You've got some great used Porsche specialists in the UK and I would suggest talking to them about maintainance costs for a car of your year and mileage: they will be well equiped to give you an accurate assessment of what you need to set aside each year.

Jasclass/Oakland/Le Chef,

Thanks for taking the time to reply - I'll phone a local specialist and try and get a view from them.

I would be devestated if the maintenance cost were extorniate as I wouldn't be able to afford the running cost.

Fingers crossed.

Cheers,

Pick up a copy of 911 And Porsche World, it is a great UK magazine that I think is very informative. Good luck with your purchase.
