need a new windshield....

A rock skipped over mine and tore a nice chunk of glass out. its spidering underneath...

Being that the windshield is somewhat chipped, I'm thinking of getting it replaced.

Looking for any words of wisdom and a recommendation of a shop in NYC

Thanks

I'll be interested in what you find out. I talked to several large glass replacement services and none of them could get the glass. They wanted me to get it at the dealer and then pay them to install.

It won't be cheap at the dealer. I ran across a company that sells and ships the windsheild for about $450, which must be half of the dealer cost by my guestimate.

Make sure you google the instructions for replacing the windshield and make sure who ever you get to do it follows best practices. It's one of those things where it's done right about 10% of the time on cars because one of the only ways you find out when it's done wrong is when you die in an accident where the windshield didn't hold up (google this too). By then, the hung over installer dude is 10 minimum wage jobs down the road and your survivors are trying to sue a company not worth much.

The most important thing to do is to make sure they come out to your house to do it so you don't have to move the car for 1-2 days while the glue dries.

Or if you want to play it safe, park it to stop the spidering and get one of those mobile glass repair people to fix it instead of replacing it. It keeps the factory seal on the glass, which is always better than any replacement job.

I need mine replaced also. I've checked with the dealer and Safelite. The cost is about the same at $1300. It turns out that the dealer has an outside glass company come install the factory glass. The glass itself is over $800.

It was a bizarre incident that broke my glass. I was doing a track day and wanted to mount a camera to the windshield. I have a Motorsport Hero camera and was using one of the little tape mounts. I went to put it just to the right and down a few inches from the rear view mirror. I pressed the mount onto the glass and it immediately cracked - big cracks - under my hand. I wasn't pushing hard, or so I thought. I've had my radar detector and an Ipass mounted in the same area on suction cups w/o any problem. I have no idea why the glass cracked like that.

The factory glass seems like low rent stuff. On my 03, it's wavy on the passenger side, which is a tell tale sign Porsche went with the low bidder.

I realize the laws are different in Florida, but down here, insurance is required to pay in full, no deductible and no insurance increase for when your windshield is replaced in this manner. The local Porsche dealership said, they do not even replace the glass themselves and they bring in a third party company. When I had to get mine replaced just recently, the insurance company would only pay $500 for the glass and wanted to give me a third party windshield. I found a local place that not only got the insurance company to pay for OEM glass, but they specialized in higher end cars and did a great job. He really knew his stuff. He was at my house the next day and replaced in within 2 hours. No leaks, no noise. Unfortunately this is not a national company, they are called Sanders Auto Glass, but I am thinking you could find a similar company in NY.
